State of Grace Tattoo Convention
Decided to go to the convention after all, though I couldn't make it on Saturday with Jaime I went on Sunday. How could I not! Mike Rubendall, Heather Baily, Jerimiah Barba, Don Ed Hardy, Shige, Gogue, BJ Betts, Henning Jorgensen, the Suluape Family, Jondix, Thomas Hooper... to name a few. I couoldnt sleep the night before I was so excited! got there and looked at everybody's portfolio talked to the artists, grabbed stickers and cards off the tables.
The first tables were these adorable Japanese artist whom I would've gotten something done by but I got the Fingerwave book and the J. Barba Slayer T instead, moving along stopped by the O Reilly's booth and they had a friendly shop guy which made me rethink what I had thought about the shop after all...I might need to go in for some work at somepoint.
Met a really chill artist from 12Monkeys, named Nephtali. He was quiet at first but after a few minutes was just like everyone else and just needed to warm up. I rounded the corner to see the State of Grace guys working the Raffle passing along and I see Mike Rubendall standing behind me and Henning Jorgensen working in the booth next door. The Water color prints were gorgeous and well printed on what appeared t be water color paper. Very well done gentlemen.and BJ Betts next to that one. I looked round trying to find someone to tattoo me, Oh look its Jack Rudy! Snake my way around and I see the Finger Wave book...which means... Holy crap there he is in all his glory, The Grime. I drool for a second and swoon for another and look through the book, $80. Damn I have more than that, but I really want a tattoo. Maybe he'll love me if I buy the book.
I put my plan of seduction through books on hold and browse through more portfolios. reach the end of the aisle and who do I see? Motha fucking Don Ed Hardy! I stand around for a few minutes wondering if I could or should talk to him, at this point I'm running off 3 hours of sleep a granola bar and a tall Soy Latte and can;t stop shaking, my head is hurting from the night before and I feel like puking. I awkwardly ask him for a card while Biff chats up Ed's art Curator. I get a card and stand there more awkwardly than before, and ask quietly
Me: "um do you think I could.."
Ed:"you wanna take a picture :)?"
Me:"uh can do that?! I was just going to ask you to sign something"
Ed: "I can do that too :)"
We take the picture and he asks what I want signed I ask if he could sign my leg he asks
"Sure, what kind of design do you want" I tell him whatever he wants on my leg wherever he wants it. He draws a sparrow and a skull and signs his Signature Ed Hardy underneath it. So at this point there's a crowd of people taking pictures and I'm grinning like an idiot the whole time. I get up he hugs me I thank him and as I'm getting up he says
"Iris this is a friend of mine, I tattooed him a long time ago, as I'm shaking his hand he says
"His name is Su'a Suluape he comes from a family of tattoo artists" I now damn well who he is and I can;t believe Ed Hardy is introducing me to Su'a Suluape
My mouth drops open and tell him its an honour to meet him
I walk down the next isle and see Spider Murphy s tattoo, I get to see Heather Bailey doing her thing alongside Paul Dobleman. and Just when I think it can't get any better I get t watch Shige himself share the space with Jeff Gogue. Both masters at work and in the zone. It's the end and I see Jondix and Thomas Hooper at work
I have to ask justincase but I know the answer. I ask if they've got any time to work but they're booked.
So I go and buy the Fingerwave book after all Grime signs it and I go back for the Barba Slayer shirt, whom J Barba got permission to use the logo since he's tattooed Kerry King. We call it a day and finally grab food before we pass out.
Truly a surreal experience
