PBA ALL-STAR WEEKEND | Terrence Romeo set to defend Three-Point Shootout crown

PBA/Nuki Sabio GlobalPort Batang Pier star Terrence Romeo is set to defend his Three-Point Shootout title against some of the league’s best snipers during the side events of the upcoming PBA All-Star Weekend slated in August. Challenging Romeo for the crown are James Yap, Jeff Chan, Alex Cabagnot, RJ Jazul, JJ Helterbrand, Almond Vosotros, KG Canaleta, Jared Dillinger, Garvo Lanete, Simon Enciso and Troy Rosario. Like his GlobalPort teammate, Jeric Fortuna is aiming for his own second straight title in the Obstacle Challenge against Scottie Thompson, Chris Ross, Mark Barroca, Carlo Lastimosa, Maverick Ahanmisi, Chris Banchero, LA Revilla, Chris Newsome, Eman Monfort, Mark Cruz and Jai Reyes. Meralco Bolts swingman Rey Guevarra is targeting to win his third straight Slam Dunk Competition against James Forrester, Mo Tautuaa, Frank Bonifacio and Chris Newsome. Capping All-Star Friday is the Greats versus Stalwarts game which will feature some PBA legends and today’s rising stars. Comprising the Greats are Maverick Ahanmisi, Kevin Alas, Anthony Semerad, Ian Sangalang, Ed Daquioag, Mac Belo, Roger Pogoy, Jonathan Grey, Noli Locsin, Bong Ravena, Johnny Abarrientos and Paolo Bugia. Part of the Stalwarts are Chris Banchero, LA Revilla, David Semerad, Raymond Almazan, Mike Tolomia, Russel Escoto, Ael Banal, Carl Bryan Cruz, Alvin Patrimonio, Nic Belasco, Ronnie Magsanoc and Topex Robinson. Phoenix makes first-ever trade, sends Jeric Fortuna to GlobalPort for future pick

PBA Media Bureau New franchise Phoenix Fuel Masters has made their very first trade in the PBA after giving away guard Jeric Fortuna to GlobalPort Batang Pier. In return, Phoenix will get Batang Pier’s 2018 second round pick. The league’s official website announced that the trade was finalized on Tuesday. It was the very first move by Phoenix which entered the league in time for the start of the ongoing OPPO Commissioner’s Cup last February. The Fuel Masters acquired the Barako Bull/Air 21 franchise and also took over the old team’s roster that included Fortuna. Fortuna, drafted by Barako Bull in 2013 and also had a stint with San Miguel, has career averages of 5 points, 1.71 rebounds and 1.27 assists. With the deal, Fortuna will be reuniting with GlobalPort coach Pido Jarencio who was his former coach at University of Santo Tomas. The Batang Pier are currently loaded at the backcourt. Apart from its dynamic duo of Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle, GlobalPort also has plenty of reserve guards such as Joseph Yeo, Roi Sumang, Jonathan Uyloan and Paolo Taha. But with Pringle currently sidelined with an ankle injury, Fortuna may see some playing time for GlobalPort that is currently on a two-game skid. http://j.mp/1Rm67WR

Energy go on huge 4th quarter run, pound Hotshots

PBA IMAGES Barako Bull went on a blistering fourth quarter run to foil Star’s attempt to seal a quarterfinals spot, 101-83, in the 2016 PBA Philippine Cup Sunday at Smart Araneta Coliseum. The Energy went on a 21-2 to turn a four-point deficit into an 88-73 lead after two free throws by Jeric Fortuna with 4:28 remaining. “Our obligation is to give our best every game,” said Barako Bull head coach Koy Banal., whose team kept its bid for a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals alive. “I’ve got to hand this win to my veterans they responded after we lost to Blackwater in our last game.” Josh Urbiztondo led Barako Bull with 24 points, 15 of which came from the 3-point area, while his fellow veteran players JC Intal and Willie Wilson added 18 points apiece as the Energy evened their win-loss record to 5-5 after losing to the Blackwater Elite, 116-92, last Friday. Fortuna, the former University of Santo Tomas star point guard, scored all of his 14 points in the fourth quarter to fill in the void left by RR Garcia, who missed the game due to a right shoulder injury.
