Happy Storyteller Saturday! Your novel and novella seem very different, how do you decide what ideas to follow through? What inspires you particularly about your current WIPs? Are there any common themes/motifs in your writing?
Hi hi! Thank you for the question!
I actually wrote Singularity (novella) for a dear friend of mine who loved science fiction. I was unfamiliar with the genre, but since I knew they loved it so much, I began to do research about it and I decided to write about two unifying interests of ours: the ultimate fate of the universe and the uncertainty of the future. In this case, this particular friend served as an inspiration for my novella; the main character, Polaris, is lightly based on them and the plot revolves around their skill as a computer engineer. Although this novella seems to be completely tailored to this friend, I still incorporated many themes that are commonly seen throughout my writing.
These themes include: existentialism, identity crises, bitterness, foolish stubbornness, quiet love, trustworthiness and betrayal, weariness for the world, and lingering hope
Likewise, Their Finest Night (novel) has elements of these as well but I wrote it solely for myself and therefore, I suppose it embodies more of my personality than anything else I have written. I started writing it again recently since I’m incapable of mulit-tasking; it took me nearly 2 years to finish Singularity and during that time, I didn’t work on any other creative projects. The characters represent fragments of my personalty but the plot is inspired by The Count of Monte Cristo, my favorite novel .I also wanted it to be historical fiction since its a genre I readily enjoy, and it provides a nice break from all the STEM classes I have to take...
