Jesse Rye Statement Assessment Three

For my final assessment for the semester I aimed to further expand on the theme that I had began interrogating with my group for time based work. A culture of consumption based on an economy of discomfort and disposable goods. After some short experiments with photography, and some preliminary plans into potential screen printing ideas I elected to use a sketchy illustrative style, inspired by the pastiche aesthetic of zines and megalo style posters. I decided to use bright colours reminiscent of mass produced screen prints or advertisements, and I’d chosen to keep a rough aspect ratio of 4:3 for the illustrations to impart a vague screen like quality. Some of the reference images were partially taken from stills I’d ripped from videos that Team Kreem had produced, some from experiments with photography, and some from my moving house experience. Despite moving and being around all of this waste; I was making artwork focussing more on the emotional discomfort, and also without realising that there is the accullumatlative factor to broken or waste objects as well as a potential mental illness associated with the detritus. All of this experience has been a catalyst for my work, and formed crucial element of what am submitting.

Overall, I feel like there are more places to go with this work, and given the time constraints I would like to make a screen printed series, whether based off these illustrations, photo based or some combination thereof.
