Changing the colors helps and so does lowering the opacity. I also tend to change parts of the shadow I don't like, mostly inner eye corner, to a similar color to my sims skin, so it shows up less and looks less dramatic.

If there's anything I always do with my makeup, it's lower the opacity. I don't like the way colors look on my darker skinned sims and they tend to all look the same(ish) because of it. :|
