On this day—September 18th, 2001—Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, the fourth studio album by Wilco, was released for free on the band’s website. After an incredibly trying recording process, it must have felt like a last straw when the band’s record company at the time, Reprise Records, rejected it for release. While shopping for a new label, the band noticed that copies of the new album began leaking online. In an effort to control its release and ensure that high quality files would be available, the band made the decision to stream the album for free on their website. After signing with Nonesuch Records, the album would finally get an “official” release in April 2002. Critically hailed as well as being the band’s best-selling record, having reached the top 20 in the US, YHF is often named as one of the best albums of the aughts.

This is a song that I only just heard yesterday, but it’s got such an amazing, calming vibe to it that I was immediately like “goddamn, more people need to hear this.” It’s a 7 minute song featuring a lovely piano rhythm, amazing guitar work, and plenty little strange instrument samples to keep things interesting.
I was pretty sure on first listen that the song was about loneliness, in particular the kinds of things people do to deal with it, as well as the big city feeling of being around hundreds of people who will never really know you. I’d recommend listening to this song while in the airport or a train/bus station, with your feet planted on the ground and your heels tapping along to the rhythm.
