I’ve got an interview!
JET Program Essay
Is there anyone willing to read my JET program essay and give me some feedback?
T.T I’m really running out of time, and I’m getting more and more anxious. I just don’t know what to do with my essay, and I feel like it’s not good enough. I’m having a hard time finding people willing to read through it....
Spent 3 slow hours working on my JET application, only to find that it logged me out without saving my progress T_T I'm now nursing a massive stress headache and am prolly gonna read for a bit and go to bed.
Busting JET Application Myths from a JET who was rejected the first time she applied
So it’s that time of year again. When people start the long and stressful process that is applying for the JET program. Several of y’all have sent me and other tumblr JETs asks about our experiences and how to prepare for the application. There seem to be some misconceptions about the whole process so I wanted to give y’all some advice from the perspective of someone who didn’t even make it to the interview stage the first time she applied. Myth #1: If I don’t have any Japanese language experience, it will be harder for me to get accepted
False! There are TONS of people who had little to no Japanese language experience when they applied for JET and a good portion of them were accepted. What was important was how they were able to show their interest in Japan and cultural exchange in their statement of purpose (SoP).
Myth #2: If I have a lot of Japanese language under my belt and have x amount of things related to Japan and Japanese culture in my resume, I’m a shoo-in. False. I will fully admit, I fell into this trap during senior year of college. I thought that with my experience studying abroad in Japan, plus interning at a Japanese cultural organization in my hometown and working at a foreign language immersion camp would give me a pretty great chance. But then the next thing I knew, I was rejected.
Myth #3: If I don’t get into JET, I am a failure. NO.
STOP RIGHT THERE.
Even with all of its’ “prestige”, you should not let this or any other important thing define you as a person. You know what will define you as a person? How you are able to pick yourself up after encountering failure. Yeah, it sucked that I didn’t get in my first time. And yeah, I let myself mope by eating too much ice cream and marathoning Korean dramas. But I eventually came to realize that I had to explore new avenues (like interning at a major online retailer or working as a medical receptionist). And those experiences, while not related to Japan or JET, helped me become a better applicant (yay people skills). Also, meeting people who were willing to teach me how to sell myself better didn’t hurt either. Myth #4: The JET application process is one big crapshoot
True-ish. Honestly, when it comes to narrowing down applicants, JET is looking for one big thing: Can you follow directions? And not just the obvious “Do you have three copies of *insert paperwork here*?”. But, can you answer the big three questions in your SoP: 1. Why Japan? 2. Why JET? 3. What can you bring to JET? If you can do that clearly and manage to sound confident without sounding arrogant, then you will be in great shape. Anyway, sorry for the long post. If y’all have any more questions, feel free to send them my way!
hey, any updates on your jet application? :)
Hello, lovely!
Thanks for asking. I’m still waaaaiiitiiiing. >.>
I wish they’d hurry up, so I can either prepare for the interview (to be fair, I should really be doing that anyway), or carry on with my life. *sigh*
JET interview - still waiting
Any other UK JET hopefuls still waiting to see if they got one?
At this stage, I'm not sure whether I want one or not. Life is pretty weird for me right now.
