jesus christ that’s awful.. but people think terrible things have to happen to a character in order for them to develop but tbh that’s absolute bullshit
Yes, exactly. I mean, I understand wanting characters to earn a happy-ending. I like that myself. I like torturing them, as well, physically and mentally. When it fits the plot. When it has consequences. When it’s not always the same characters with the same clichéd homophobic parents/abusive dads/abusive rapist boyfriends.
But most of the stuff I read these days contain things I want nothing to do with. It’s like the Avengers fandom all over (and wow, that one could be awful), where it felt Asgard had its own torture chambers and shit to lock poor, little Loki up and stuff things up every hole he has (artificially created or not, shh).
Y’know, I often feel like people use rape and abuse in backstories or in frustratingly graphic fanworks as a cheap way of creating a situation where the author insert (in this exact case. Archie) can safe the character the author is in love with the most in order to get them to “overcome“ their traumatic backstories.
Or, and that often happens as well, it’s an excuse for the villain to become the way they are. Oh, if only someone loved them, oh, if only they hadn’t been abused as a child, they would never have become evil! (which is a) disgusting apologism and b) in Maxie’s case dumb, because he doesn’t see himself as a villain, and if he HAD been raped and abused and his mother had not helped him and blablabla, I don’t believe he would ever have had the mindset of “I want to help people (and pokemon) create a better world”)
It’s why I don’t think highly of certain parts of the hardenshipping fanbase (which might derive from them being fans of “that one fic that must not be named”). I’ve seen people getting told that “hardenshipping is hardcore and if you like fluf you’re an ooc-creating piece of shit and everything that’s WRONGWRONGWRONG with the fandom” and I’m sitting here, feeling too old for any of this bullshit.
(It’s funny that the Hans fandom creates 99% of pure fluff, because Hans has been abused and neglected and that’s canon, and people are all like “I want my baby to be happy ;w;”)
inb4 “you’ve written non-con before, you hypocrite”, shh.
This is so long, I am so sorry, I am just annoyed. ;w;
