The random strike of lightning fills the dark room, the deafening thunder didn’t help settle me from the terrors I experienced before. Looking over at the snoring man beside me, not even phased by the loud rumbling that’s causing the house to tremble. Josh seems peaceful as his arm tightens around my waist, which supplies a small sense of comfort.
“Joshua.” I whisper loud enough that he stirs in sleep, my heart pounding my chest, cold sweats becoming evident on my body. The feeling of claustrophobia is getting strong as his body heat isn’t helping, though I know once he lets go all hell will break loose.
I can hear slight grunts come from his mouth as his eyebrows furrow, “I’m fine. It’s just a little hot.” I say not wanting to wake him up.
His arm loosens around my waist as he backs up from me, allowing the wind above to hit my damp skin. Panic settling in as the images from the nightmare resurface in my head, the loud thunder adding affects as I close my eyes tight.
The urge to cry is strong as the nightmare keeps replaying, it’s too much. Plugging my ears, my eyes now peeking out from the tight close they were in before, my heartbeat loud in my ears now.
“What are you doing?” Josh mumbles beside me as he pulls my hand away from my ears, his face covered in concern as tears fall onto my puffed cheeks. As much as I try to force myself to speak, the only thing that comes from my mouth is sobs. Joshua now sitting up quickly to hover above me, “Why are you crying?” His hands go to pull me closer to him.
Curling up into him, I can barely get a word out just choked up sobs. “Breathe Baby. It’s okay.” His hand rubs small circles on my back, “It’s just a thunderstorm.” He assumes as I lay into his chest. My body shaking in his hold, but my once cries were now sniffles.
He mimics strong breaths for me to follow, “I’m here for you.” Josh mumbles tiredly. The nightmares leaving my head as he rambles about his family tree and wrestling, melting into his warm touch. Barely able to continue listening, I find myself falling back asleep even though I know the number of questions he’s going to ask in the morning.
