One reason might be smell? Because some pets can leave a distinctive smell behind, usually stemming from poor owner care of their waste, that kids don’t.

Haha well, people can be as neglectful of cleaning up after their kids as their pets. Y'know, teens that keep piling up trash and dishes in their rooms? Attracting bugs and other critters.
Point being, kids and pets are equally potentially destructive and disruptive. I realize I framed that claim as a question [why charge for one and not the other] in my original post rather than simply being clear. So what I’m actually getting at is: I don't think pet people should have to fork out extra rent (per pet) each month. Any damage cost should be taken out of the deposit. Maybe pet and parent people pay a larger deposit than non kid or pet people?
