Summary: Venice, 1845. Carnevale. James Fitzjames is at a private masked ball in his prettiest gown and an elaborate red wig. Where he meets a stranger with a soft brogue, who makes a very specific request.
This is for the prodigiously talented and generous @corinthes, who gave me three dizzyingly wonderful prompts for the James Fitzjames Birthday Extravanganza. I do not deserve you.
Excerpt below the cut.
It’s James Fitzjames’s birthday!

“You know,” Francis said, later that evening. “I told William that we were living as husband and wife, but we haven’t really had anything like a wedding, have we. I only started calling you Lady Crozier when we went to Portugal, because anything else would have been suspect.”
James looked up from the sketch he’d been doing, Francis in profile. “Francis… we can’t. There isn’t a church in the world that would marry us.”
