Summary: Venice, 1845. Carnevale. James Fitzjames is at a private masked ball in his prettiest gown and an elaborate red wig. Where he meets a stranger with a soft brogue, who makes a very specific request.

This is for the prodigiously talented and generous @corinthes​, who gave me three dizzyingly wonderful prompts for the James Fitzjames Birthday Extravanganza. I do not deserve you.

Excerpt below the cut.

The stranger is standing precisely where James left him, half in, half out of the scant light cast by the near-extinguished torch. He is standing loosely at attention, James sees, and he wants, urgently, to have him out of that domino in which he looks so ill-at-ease. He takes a step towards him and the stranger says ‘What’s your name?’

His voice is gentle and the soft rich ‘r’ in ‘your’ gives the question power. Names have power too, thinks James, especially here in this damp and pagan place where James is being someone else, or being exclusively and unavoidably himself. He says, dropping his voice: ‘What would you like to name me?’

The man’s eyes move to James’s wig – a halo of scarlet around his head, James knows from his preparations this evening – and James sees his chest move in and out. ‘James,’ he says.

Yes, yes he was.

i am SO glad that he was recasted in broadway 2016 where a proper master was in residence, at least we have video. mark was stern but still warm. he’s a toucher, he keeps touching people all throughout the show, from the cafe scenes to the barricade scenes. 

i like how in the cafe scene you can clearly see the aha! moment when he realizes that lamarque’s death gave them the best time to start the revolt. he places his hands on the sides of gavroche’s face as if to say, “eureka, you are a godsend.”

most enjolrai are too gung-ho and angry, but he had the right balance of enthusiasm and command. when eponine dies, the students look at him first and wait for him to nod before they get on with carrying eponine’s body. i absolutely love that almost-imperceptible dynamic.

dude seriously, this post is a goddamn breath of fresh air! i don’t care if people hated tlj but it’s just super necessary and tbh obnoxious to post about how much they hated it 25 times a day

for real, though!

like, I understand that a lot of people had really intense emotional reactions to TLJ (whether positive or negative), but I really expected everybody to mellow out eventually.

and I think we were getting there, after a couple of months -- but then the DVD came out and everybody rewatched TLJ and the antis got pissed off again. by the end of the year, I hope things settle down.

the fervor is mind-boggling to me. like -- you hate this movie (probably bc it didn’t conform to the script you’d already written in your head, let’s be real), so you... talk about it every single day?? think about it constantly??

I don’t understand. antis devote more time and energy into TLJ than people who actually love it.
