Alaap in JhinJhoti, Pandit Sugato Nag (Sitar), with his son Snehesh (Sitar) I have been taking lessons from Kalkutta based Pt. Sugato Nag for nearly 5 years now, although I have had a couple of long breaks due to my cancer. Its time I contacted him and got the lessons restarted again, as I really miss playing Sitar. Indian Raaga is one of the most sublime of all music.

Raga Jhinjhoti

Jhinjhoti is a light, lively, joyful and relaxing raga. You may already be familiar with it - Hindi film songs like "Ghungroo ki Tarah bajta hi rahan hoon", "Koi Hamdam Na Raha, Koi Sahara na Raha" are representative examples without the full raga scope.  These specific tracks are more on the sad and reflective side of things.

In Hindustani compositions, I got hooked from the N Rajam rendition. In the pre-digital days, it was quite difficult to see this raga come up in retail stores. Now with Flipkart, it is quite easy to build a raga collection - even if you want to buy parts of an album.

The Ronu Majumdar rendition is a full-length one-hour masterpiece. The first track starts off slow, builds the mood and the tempo and ends in a flourish.

The Hariprasad Chaurasia recording is 45 minutes. It is on a more sombre note. Deep bass effects on Tabla. The flute is less prominent.

The Sarod rendition by Buddhadeb Das Gupta is done quite well. 1 hr 12 minutes elaborate rendition. The tonal rhythm would be with you quite some time after you finished listening to it. I don't see a digital version at Flipkart. Have linked to the CD.

Rashid Khan has a Tarana from the NCPA Archives. A short rendition but captures the spirit of the raga well.

Rajan Sajan Mishra have a 30-min beautiful rendition in their album Sadhana.
