The Best Thing This Year So Far
I think a lot of times the SD interlaced with old footage is kind of tired format. It’s something that’s been done to death in the early 2000′s and a few people continue to rehash it every year for nostalgia sake. As someone who has posted a bunch of video in that time frame... I’m completely tired of it. Regardless the unassumingly titled JIB: Tape #4 is probably the best thing I saw all year full length wise. I say unassumingly cause with a title like that you’d imagine it just be another tired 10 minute SD edit.
JIB: Tape #4 feels like a scene report of what we know about Philadelphia. All the different crews are equally represent in this. #4 intercuts the different sections with an old audio recording of an actual historian describing the different demographics that inhabited Philadelphia paralleling the different crews and their sections. Each crew has it’s own stylings and trademarks, unique to themselves giving the video a nice sense of variety. No section feels slow or lacking compared to anything else. Something that happens a lot in videos.
Jon Schimpf in my opinion has the standout section. Quite honestly last section worthy but for the main editor/filmer to do that, he would have to be some type of egotistical butthole. His section is creative and technical, which makes it a treat to watch. No one rides like him which is always a plus in my book. Proof that a creative is a creative regardless of the medium; bike or camera. Everyone else’s section is amazing also, there are no slow section.
A large aspect of this video that definitely went noticed is how clean everything is filmed. White balance done correctly, the colors look amazing, even the sound design is amazing, there was definitely a lot of thought into that also. Every clip in this video is filmed on point. Nothing feels bro cammed or awkward. It feels like Joe Cox production in that sense. Perfect angles, every clip. Like I said in the beginning I dislike a lot SD stuff these days. They tend to be cliches of themselves and really don’t progress the art of filming and editing. Just taking stuff thats been done for close to 20 years now (something the video references) and doing it and over. Jib #4 doesn’t feel like that. Even though the format should make it feel like it, it absolutely doesn’t. It pushes what the SD is capable of to the max and makes best use of the camera. It’s doesn’t treat the SD as a gimmick and it’s better for it.
