BIO From Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles, the ultimate show-stopping doo-wop group inducted into the R&B Hall of Fame, to Labelle, the groundbreaking glam funk band known for the No. 1 single "Lady Marmalade" ("Voulez Vous Coucher Avec Moi Ce Soir?"), and through a stunning solo career that has spawned hits like "Busting Out," "I Sweat (Going Through the Motions)," and "Transformation," Nona Hendryx has always been on the cutting edge of music. Her collaborations in the music industry range from the Talking Heads, Brian Eno, Material, Prince, and Peter Gabriel to Wyclef Jean, Lenny Kravitz, and many others. After her award-winning stint with Labelle, which included albums like Moon Shadow (1972), Pressure Cookin' (1973), and the smash hit Nightbirds (1975), Hendryx began her solo career with surprisingly little fanfare. Her eponymous debut solo effort, for all its quality, failed to achieve notable success when it came out in 1977. With the release of Nona (1983), however, audiences began to take notice, and her solo career took flight with albums like The Heat (1985), Female Trouble (1987), Skin Diver (1989), and You Have to Cry Sometime (1992). Hendryx hasn't released a full-length original solo album since her 1992 release. That's all about to change in 2012. The singer's latest album, Mutatis Mutandis (Latin for "the necessary changes having been made"), is set to be released this summer in the U.S. on Righteous Babe Records. A quirky and political musical tour de force, the disc provides strong commentary on current issues like the Tea Party, Rush Limbaugh, and Enron. These blunt political overtones don't blunt Hendryx's vocals, though - they remain as soulful and raw as ever, soaring over a funky blend of blues and rock. Join Hendryx tonight at B.B. King Blues Club as she celebrates the U.S. release of this potent album.

~ Theophilus London ~ Culture vultures and hardcore music fans alike already known urban electro-pop phenom Theophilus London from his self-starting music trajectory, as well as from his style icon profiles in GQ, Esquire, Elle, The New York Times, Complex, Fader, and more. A native of Trinidad, London spent time growing up in Brooklyn before moving to the Poconos, where he graduated from high school in 2006. He first began making waves at the end of the ’00s with a series of wildly popular independent mixtapes, including Jam! (2008), This Charming Mixtape (2009), and I Want You (2010).
In 2011, London signed with Warner Bros. Records, quickly releasing his debut EP on the label, Lovers Holiday. His full-length label debut, Timez are Weird These Days, followed the same year. His subsequent string of performances, including appearances at the Cannes Film Festival, the Northside Festival in Brooklyn, and the Montreal International Jazz Festival, created a tremendous media buzz around the singer and emcee. As the Montreal Gazette declared, “Theophilus London is going to be big. Very big.”
Featuring popular cuts like “I Stand Alone,” “Last Name London,” and “Why Even Try,” Timez are Weird is London’s most fully-realized work to date. Filled with original music, genre-bending sound, mesmerizing storytelling, and inspired, honest emotion, the album raises the bar on everything that’s come before, moving past the comfort zone of sampledelia and oddball cover tunes into the dreamlike headspace of a globetrotting young artist blurring the lines between ’80s rap, new wave beats, freestyle noise, and the snarling guitars of psychobilly surf rock.
Recorded in New York City, Los Angeles, and Stockholm, Timez are Weird showcases London as a rapper and a songwriter, showcasing a set of influences that range from Michael Jackson and Prince to Kraftwerk and The Smiths. The tracks on the disc move through a surprising range of emotions, from party-starting dance floor defiance to moments of quiet intimacy and introspection. “The world is finally catching up with [Theophilus London]” declared the Alternative Press. “If you like your Golden Age-style hip-hop mashed up with love for Morrisey and Marvin Gaye, then make London your destination.”

Mezzo-soprano Alicia Hall Moran brings diverse influences and passions together in a rich, quintessentially modern artistic brew. She is constantly balancing performances in the realms of musical theater (currently understudying Bess and Audra McDonald in George and Ira Gershwin's Porgy & Bess, directed by Diane Paulus), opera-cabaret (currently performing with the motown project at The Kitchen, Le Poisson Rouge, Regattabar, etc.), art performance (currently collaborating with visual artists such as Joan Jonas, Adam Pendleton, Simone Leigh, and Liz Magic Laser), and jazz (most frequently with husband and pianist Jason Moran), while consistently finding outlets for her other loves - dance (music for Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane Dance Company's award-winning Chapel/Chapter) and writing (in her weekly classical music column Suite Sounds for the New York Amsterdam News).
Upholding the traditions of her great-great uncle Hall Johnson (legendary choral director, composer, and preserver of the Negro Spiritual) and her greatest teachers (Shirley Verrett, Adele Addison, Hilda Harris, David Jones, and Warren Wilson) without being tethered to the classical repertoire, Moran's performances transcend all expectations. Her singing and theatrical sensibilities lead purely into a sensual musical world where the lyricism of Marvin Gaye and the high drama of Puccini collide.

Amidst The Roots' busy schedule, from performing as the house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to recently fronting a Pre-Emmy Awards jam session, the legendary crew has returned with their latest musical creation, a new album entitled undun (Island Def Jam). Set for release on December 6, 2011, undun marks the first conceptually-based album from The Roots and quickly reaffirms the creativity of the outfit notorious for pushing the envelope. The album's first single, "Make My" featuring Big K.R.I.T., dropped on November 1st on iTunes. In addition to their new album, The Roots are set to perform in New York City on November 29th and 30th and December 6th at the Highline Ballroom. undun is an existential re-telling of the short life of one Redford Stephens (1974-1999). Through the use of emotives and Redford's internal dialogues, the album seeks to illustrate the intersection of free will and prescribed destiny as it plays out "on the corner." Utilizing a reverse narrative arc, the album begins as the listener finds Redford disoriented - postmortem - and attempting to make sense of his former life. As he moves through its pivotal moments, he begins to deconstruct all that has led to his (and our own) coming undun.
Formed in 1987 in Philadelphia, PA, the legendary Roots Crew consists of Black Thought (MC), Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson (drums), Kamal Gray (electronic keyboards), F. Knuckles (percussion), Captain Kirk Douglas (electronic guitar), Damon Bryson (sousaphone), James Poyser (electronic keyboard), and Mark Kelly (electronic bass). Having previously released 12 projects, The Roots have become one of the best known and most respected hip-hop acts in the business, winning four Grammys, most recently for Best R&B Album for Wake Up! (2010), Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance for "Hang on in There" (with John Legend), and Best Group or Duo R&B Vocal Performance for "Shine." Additionally, in 2009 The Roots, named one of the greatest live bands around by both Spin and Rolling Stone, became the official house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, where they currently perform every Monday - Friday.

Drummer and producer Ahmir Thompson is a living link between the digital science of modern hip-hop and the flesh-and-blood textures of vintage R&B. He co-founded the Roots, universally hailed as one of the most sonically inventive hip-hop acts. Meanwhile, his collaborations with such artists as D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, and Common have reasserted the importance of real-time playing in a style dominated by sampling and programming.
"I'm really into the game of making people guess, is it a machine, or is it him?" says Thompson, who also goes by the name ?uestlove (pronounced "Questlove"). One famous example is the Roots' biggest hit, "You Got Me," which sounds for all the world like a programmed side stick pattern – until Thompson cuts loose with a blazing drum-and-bass groove. Like much of Thompson's work, the passage is startling, witty, and funky.
"Hip-hop is based in rhythm, repetition, and perfect time," says Thompson. "With Roots stuff, I go for a more perfect, quantized-type sound than I would with, say, Erykah or D'Angelo. For D'Angelo's Voodoo [2000], we wanted to play as perfectly as we could, but then deliberately insert the little glitch that makes it sound messed up. The idea was to sound disciplined, but with a total human feel." For Thompson, "human feel" is bred in the bone. His father was the leader of the '50s doo-wop group Lee Andrews and the Hearts, and Ahmir literally grew up onstage. "I was playing percussion at gigs from the age of seven because my parents didn't believe in babysitters," he says. "By 13, I was the musical director, and I stayed in that world until I got a record deal with the Roots at age 22."
Thompson relies on several Yamaha kits: a new Maple Custom Absolute, several sets from the early '80s, and the Stage Custom he used with D'Angelo. But Thompson's tireless studio experimentation is as crucial to his drum sounds as the instruments themselves. "I like to mold sounds like clay," he says. "Sometimes I put drums through a guitar amp. Or we might put mikes everywhere – in the room, down the hall, anyplace you might hear the drums. Sometimes we use just the farthest mikes, EQ them until they sound dirty enough, mix it all to one track, really compress it, and then bounce it to another track. We'd go around that cycle a few times – six generations, maybe.

Blue Note Jazz Festival
Normally we present an amazing musical night to our readers in Hollywood every week with our Desert Nights events on Wednesday. This post is for the east coasters staying at our New York hotel this week. Although The Standard is not affiliated with this event, we still highly recommend this enriching escape into music. It's sort of a mash-up of jazz music played at it's highest level mixed with some new flavor -- namely Questlove and Rakim. Here's the breakdown this week...

Mo’ Meta Blues II, Paid in Full 25th Anniversary Edition featuring Rakim, Black Thought, DJ J.Period & James Poyser. Paid in Full Paid in Full is credited as a benchmark album of golden age hip hop. Rakim’s rapping, which pioneered the use of internal rhymes in hip hop, set a higher standard of lyricism in the genre and served as a template for future rappers. The album’s heavy sampling by Eric B. became influential in hip hop production. The record has sold over a million copies and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified it platinum in 1995. In 2003, the album was ranked number 227 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
