I'm probably not being original here...

But Junji Ito would have made great illustrations for The Great God Pan. He can do uncanny valley so well.

That's this depiction of Helen's death by Dave Carson that made me realize this. Very reminiscent of one of the most famous scenes from Tomie (the one with the portrait). Tomie herself is similar enough to Helen, though, unfortunately, it seems that her character gets little development despite the length of the comic.
