okay so...which hyuna songs should I listen to first??
OH MY GOD YES PLEASE WELCOME TO MY (once) SECRET MUSICAL OBSESSION
I was first introduced to Hyuna when I accidentally clicked on the female version of “Gangnam Style”, “Oppa Is Just My Style”.
Intrigued--it had been a looooooong time since I had listened to k-pop of any kind--I searched for more, and came up with her duet as half of the group Trouble Maker, aptly named “Trouble Maker”. The video has 75M views, and I’m pretty sure at least 5M are just from me. I love this song. It is a wonderful song, though her part is fairly small.
I ran into a lot of more actually pop-type stuff which, while enjoyable, wasn’t really my thing.
Then I found “Change” and, if I hadn’t been bisexual before, I would have immediately become so, and when I say this, you must understand that I was equally enamored of her voice. It was epiphanal. Start there.
“Roll Deep” is just a fucking trip from start to finish. Even without the music video, though you really want to watch the music video. Listen to the song first without looking at it, however, because otherwise you’ll be too distracted to actually pay attention to the music. Trust me on this.
The awesome(st) thing about Hyuna is how versatile she is as an artist. Her rapping is flawless, but her singing voice is angelic. Need proof? Check out “To My Boyfriend”.
Feeling a little guilty about your appreciation regarding how, uh, in touch Hyuna is with her body? Make “Run & Run” your next stop. (She cowrote this song, and also “To My Boyfriend”, and “How’s This?” which I somehow haven’t mentioned yet but is practically perfect in every way.)
Hyuna didn’t write “Red”, but you can’t listen to Hyuna without listening to this. It’s catchy as fuck, and the music video is...interesting. Fun! But strange. You’ll have mixed feelings about monkeys, and no, I’m not explaining that.
Which brings us to her latest earworm, “Lip & Hip”, an unapologetic ode to her own body and how unafraid she is to put herself on display. It’s very much an in-your-face challenge to tell her she’s too sexy, that she’s anything less than the fucking queen. “Lip & Hip” is also an ideal balance between her rapping and her singing. There is literally nothing I don’t adore about this song.
Better still? Hyuna wrote that song on her own; there’s no doubting the validity of the lyrics.
Okay, so I accidentally threw a lot at you. Because I want you to join me in my ongoing Hyuna-shaped breakdown, please have this convenient playlist of her music in the order I just suggested. <3
