J. Marion Sims is known as the "Father of Gynecology." "Sims’ research was conducted on enslaved black women without anesthesia, medical ethicists, historians and others have called for those monuments to be removed—or for them to be reconfigured as tributes to the enslaved women known to have endured his experiments." 🌹 📚 || #BlackHistoryMonth #JMarionSims #WomensVoicesMatter #BlackVoicesMatter #KimiTaughtYou (at Broward County, Florida)
#throwbackthursday in Medical History: J. Marion Sims was a white sadist who is often considered "the father of gynecology". His breakthroughs are built on the backs of enslaved black women and the *persisting* medical myth he perpetuated that "black women feel less pain". He procured enslaved black women (at least two named Betsy and Lucy) and repeatedly subjected them to experiments without anesthesia. Most of the women later died of infeciton. #TAKEITDOWN #Noraciststatues #racisminmedicine #medicalhistory #eastharlem #centralpark #blackhealthmatters #blacklivesmatter #jmarionsims #obgyn #womenshealth @blackyouthproject
J. Marion Sims was a gynecologist in the 1800s who purchased enslaved "black" women and used them as guinea pigs for his untested surgical experiments. He repeatedly performed genital surgery on "black" women WITHOUT ANESTHESIA because according to him, "Black women don't feel pain.” Despite his inhumane tests on "black" women, Sims was named “the father of modern gynecology”, and his statue currently stands right outside of the New York Academy of Medicine. #BabylonWillFall #BlackAugust #JMarionSims
