SELINA KYLE’S POST CRISIS ORIGIN STORY WITH COMIC PANELS

This will be a long explanation on how she became Catwoman along with specific comic issues at the end.

In 1987, Batman: Year One was released, effectively marking a new era after the Crisis on Infinite Earths event. This time period involved multiple overlapping origin stories for Selina, but the final timeline is as follows.

Selina Kyle was born to Brian and Maria Kyle, Irish and Cuban immigrants respectively. Brian abused his family which eventually pushed Maria to suicide, and Brian drank himself to death soon after. This led Selina to join an orphanage, Seagate Institution For Girls. Maggie’s whereabouts are not hinted at this time, but we are later led to believe she was in foster care at this time (Catwoman 1993 #81). This institution is abusive and corrupt, and Selina finds out how the headmistress was embezzling funds. She blackmails the headmistress and frees herself and all the girls (Catwoman 1993 #0).

This leads her to a life on the streets in the east end of Gotham at around 10 years old. Here she gets picked up by a carnival, run by a man named Del Halperm, who teaches her to steal and helps her refine her acrobatic skills (Catwoman 1993 #75). Hal unfortunately passes, and she eventually joins a gang led by Mama Fortuna, where she learned to steal but was treated as a slave. This leads her to escape with her friend Sylvia as a teenager, and they turn to prostitution to survive (Catwoman 2002 #12). At 19, she is getting pimped out by her abusive boyfriend Stan. After a violent encounter, she is left in the hospital and a sympathetic police officer offers her a number to find help. This contact turns out to be Ted Grant, the Wildcat, who teaches her how to fight (Catwoman 1989 #1).

Selina has taken in a young girl named Holly who has also turned to prostitution, caring for her. She is a dominatrix and thief at this point in time, not yet catwoman. As she is stealing from a museum, she has a run in with a ninja that leads her to follow him, where she discovers an entire secret organization. The armless master are a group of ninjas who have perfected a form of martial arts that combines them all into one form. She learns from them, perfecting the form in a year as she turns 19 (Catwoman 1993 Annual #2)

It is around this time that Selina and Bruce meet for the first time as an encounter with Holly and Bruce turns violent causing Selina to jump in, attacking Bruce (Batman: Year One #1). It is the Batman that inspires her to become the Catwoman, as she sees him in his costume and decides to adopt her own (Batman: Year One #3). The events of Catwoman (1989) and what’s remaining of Batman: Year One play out, and the Catwoman is born.

**The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, and Catwoman: When In Rome explore a different route where Selina may or may not be the daughter of mob boss Carmine Falcone, with Selina believing she is. Writers either mention this, stick with Selina’s original parentage, or ignore her origins altogether. This is why I made the disclaimer that her origins overlap, because we never get closure on her “true” parentage.

Her Falcone Origin is as such: Sofia Falcone was the eldest daughter, but Louisa and Carmine had another. Afraid of the consequences of having another daughter instead of a son, he sends the baby off with Milos Grapa (his bodyguard) for disposal. Louisa Falcone stops the bodyguard, and the baby is sent to America and put up for adoption (Catwoman: When In Rome #6). The baby is never confirmed to be Selina, but Carmine is continuously brought up as her alleged father, so it’s very reasonable to draw the conclusion that he is.
