Extensions!!

Today was such an exciting day!! I was able to get in contact with my hair lady and asked her if she would mind if I came in and job shadowed her in the salon. She told me I could and today she was doing hair extensions on a client...which meant I was able to watch!

For all the hair people out there, we know hair extensions cost a lot of money and is a huge service. In cosmetology school (at least where I attend), its not in the standard to teach extensions, so they don't. You have to go and pay a couple thousand dollars to learn them. However today, I got to learn. Granted, i'm not certified for it, obviously, but getting to watch it and see how she did them was so cool. It was so tedious, yet so interesting to me.

If I ever start to lose the spark of doing hair, that was a great reminder that there is so much creativeness, challenging, but fun things I could do. Not to mention, bring in a lot of money.

Anyways, the transformation from start to end was incredible and it definitely pushes me to want to learn how to do them, and offer it to people out there!!

Update

Hello everyone, sorry for not posting much. Here is an update on me.

Since my last post, I have officially graduated college and will be receiving my associates degree in arts in six weeks. I was crying with relief a few hours before, and I had a wonderful dinner with my mom and stepdad. My sister was not able to attend because she is currently in the hospital for poor lung function and a surgery coming up soon.

This morning, I started job shadowing a local CPA firm in my area, and I learned a lot in the first day! My teacher recommended coming in with a list of questions, so if you ever get the opportunity to job shadow, here is a big list of questions you may want to look at:

I literally googled ‘job shadow questions’ and this was the first result of the search.

I took some time to myself today and rode on my bike while listening to Stay by Post Malone around my neighborhood for half an hour or so and I felt really content with myself and my life. I’m hoping to do this again every day this week.

Tomorrow evening, my roommate at university and I will be able to pick our dorm room and we’re both very excited!

A week after Friday, I will be graduating with my high school diploma and after that, I guess I’ll just be updating you all on my transition from high school/community college to university.

I hope you all find the time to feel content with where you are in life. You have all experienced so much, so take some time to look back and appreciate all the obstacles you faced and conquered to get where you are now, with all your accomplishments and new discoveries that you make every day.

Sometime next month, I will be job shadowing an accounting firm, I’m just not sure which one yet. I’m learning as much as I can about some local businesses through their websites so I’ll know what to expect from any place I may work in the future! I’m putting the most emphasis on individual history, mission statement, and services, then I will contact each firm and ask if they’re interested.

Junior Achievement’s Job Shadow Program Builds Career-Readiness

A pilot and aviation pioneer, inventor based in Virginia Beach, VA, Robert Anthony Nolan has gained experience flying a variety of aircraft since earning his first pilot license in 1984. Alongside his various professional pursuits, Robert Nolan has also worked in support of a number of nonprofit organizations, including his work as a volunteer teacher for Junior Achievement in Virginia Beach, VA. Dedicated to giving youth the knowledge and skills necessary to attain future economic success, Junior Achievement oversees various education programs in the areas of work readiness, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship. In addition to in-school programs featuring interactive classroom activities, the organization provides students with real-world experience through programs such as JA Job Shadow. Designed for high school students, JA Job Shadow helps participants learn what it takes to find and maintain gainful employment in a satisfying career. The program consists of three classroom sessions as well as a job shadow visit to a local place of work. Each classroom session correlates to state content standards and focuses on work-readiness topics such as networking, resumes, and interviewing. The job shadow component, which typically lasts four to five hours, gives students the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in a professional environment. Following all of the activities, students reflect on the experience and write a thank you note to the community partners.
