RE: They had taken the biggest step in getting a place together in Brooklyn after Zee had put down roots and took up an old theater on Broadway for her show. Now that this time and place was her home, she didn't need to worry about going back and forth. Her and Bucky had set up the cozy place and she was currently sitting on the floor in the living room thumbing through catalogues for furniture waiting for him to get home. She also had a surprise for him, and the small kitten was playing with her fingers and the small wisps of magic she had trailing down as she flipped the pages. Around the kitten's neck was a bow and she was more relaxed than she had been in some time. They were home and they were safe -- they could finally live a life that they both deserved. But mostly Bucky -- Zee wanted a normal life for him so that he could finally be at ease and rest after everything he had been through.
STATUS: always accepting random things !
life was weird. part of bucky felt like he was walking along the razor’s edge, just waiting for the other shoe to drop. it couldn’t be this easy, could it? after everything he’d been through. after every time he was pulled back in to hydra’s grasp could it really just end in the domestic setting he hoped to have all those decades ago? sure, he was still fighting to a degree. being part of sam’s team was more his choice than anything else. what was bucky going to do, find some eight to five somewhere? start wearing a suit? people were suffering and all he’d ever known was fighting. it only made sense.
at least, this time, it was on his own terms with his own autonomy.
he stops for a few seconds at the front door, staring down at the way his keys had multiplied since meeting zatanna. there’d been two when they first met; front door and harley. that was it. now there were spares for a number of different things, an office key, keys that didn’t look familiar. for some reason, seeing them all splayed out in the palm of his hand hits very close to home. when he was sitting out in the wakandan wilds with ayo, waiting to see whether or not shuri’s de-programming had worked he honestly had no idea he’d be able to make it here. here to a somewhat normal life with someone who took all the good with the bad ( so, so much bad ). someone who was patient with the nightmares and the hard time he had being open and emotional.
with one last grip, the soldier opens the front door. odd seeing more furniture greet him than when he’d first gotten his pardon. all the comfort was going to take a while to get used to but it was not very practical to expect someone else to sleep on the hardwood with him. zee would, he didn’t have any doubt she would. the point was bucky wanted her to be more comfortable than that, especially if she had to deal with his random nightmare thrashings.
zatanna’s on the floor. normally, he’d crawl right over to join her. maybe he’d even try to put his head in her lap. but, his eyes follow the line of her arm to the movement on the other end. “ what... “ his head jerks back. bucky even looks over his shoulder to make sure he’d made it in to the right apartment. “ who... “ he can feel his eyes widening. all he can focus on is the tiny little ball of fluff with a bow around it’s neck. it was so small and so tiny and he was decades of war.
finally, the soldier settles down on his knees. it’s close enough that leaning over allows him to kiss zatanna’s cheek. “ please tell me fans don’t do weird things like bring you gift kittens. “
