Karen was teetering on the edge of consciousness, blood matted in hair, skin broken and bruised, body aching. Every breath in hurt - how many times had his foot connected with her stomach, her ribs? - and every breath out felt like it might be her last. She could hear Carl moving up and away; his steps were heavy, a drunken stumble indicative of his current condition, but Karen couldn’t do anything. Struggling to stay awake was hard enough, and she felt like she was underwater, the sound of upstairs almost a distant din in her mind.
There was a scuffle, shouting, Carl’s angry voice slurred out and Karen wondered who was there, who he was yelling at but she couldn’t make out a voice, just footsteps…and then there was a heavier thud that was not footsteps and then footsteps following after that.
Footsteps that came down the stairs, that neared her, and Karen wanted to move, she wanted to scramble away because if it was Carl…if he was coming back…she knew she would not be alive once he got ahold of her again. But there was that voice, muffled by the pain but familiar, comforting, and Karen sucked in a pained little sob as Bucky’s presence was then by her side. “Bucky,” came the relieved sob and Karen pushed, right eye already swelling, nose and lip bloody.
As soon as Karen pushed herself upright, as she reached out for Bucky, the pain intensified and the wave of nausea crashed over her violently - she bent as she began to wretch, watery bile coming up and emptying out of her stomach and every movement seemed to worse, the pain shooting through her body from her ribs, her skull pounding.
Even with such a short amount of time together, Carl had done some damage, it seemed.
what he saw took him back. other fights, other death, other bodies with blood-matted hair. only, those had been at his own hands. they came to him in flashes and fragments in the depths of his nightmares. worse, was that he only recognized some of the faces. howard stark came to him often, down on the ground and pleading for life. his wife crawled from the car to beg for her husband.
even though this wasn’t his doing, the guilt sat in his shoulders all the same. if he’d shown up sooner. if he’d paid more attention to some of karen’s body language. if a lot of things. much, much easier to beat yourself up for in retrospect. “ yeah, angel, it’s me. i got you. “ with one knee on the ground, the soldier comes in close. hands hover in the air, worrying about doing more harm than good. what he can’t show is how badly his heart is breaking or how much he wants to climb back up those stairs to finish the job he started. the guy clearly didn’t deserve to keep breathing, not after this. unfortunately, taking that time meant dragging bucky away from karen and he wasn’t willing to that considering her state.
“ we have to get going, okay? “ he slides out of the leather jacket, setting it across karen’s shoulders. that still leaves him in a grey hoodie to cover up the metal arm. with her state he didn’t actually care except questions about it might put off her care. when she leans over to wretch it’s automatic to pull back her hair. his eyebrows pinch together and lips press into a thin line, choking down that anger. he wished he could do something to ease her pain right then. bucky knew from his own experience that the stairs nor the car ride were going to be easy on her injuries. at least he hadn’t been on the harley.
getting karen settled in to the passenger’s side is an exercise in restraint. bucky thinks about the drunken bastard the entire way. not just about removing one more unnecessary life from the world but what the chances were that he’d try anything like this again.
