Going Blonde... Part 1.. Colour Removal
** I'd like to dedicate this blog post to Elis Bond who I know will thoroughly enjoy lol'ing at my orange hair **
Left Photo: About 2/3 Inches of roots showing through (I a have very dark blonde almost light brown hair naturally)
Right Photo: The colour of my hair before I started the process
My Hair History:
When I was born I had very light - almost white blonde hair up until the age of about 11/12 when it started getting darker and darker.. I started highlighting my hair at about the age of 13/14 (I'm now 22). At 16 I dyed my hair several different shades of brown.. then finally stupidly went BLACK around 18/19. I redyed my roots black because the colour just wouldn't fade.
20th Birthday... decided I'd had enough... used a lightener (I forget which brand), It actually did take all of the black out and I HAD NO ORANGE!!! Then I made the mistake of dying my hair BRIGHT RED (XXL Red Passion).. anybody that has dyed their hair red will know how wonderful it looks but how quickly it fades MEH :-/ I kept this hair colour up for about 5 months? I then started dying my hair a purple colour (xxl Ultra Violet) for around 3 months... Then I decided I wanted blonde hair again..!
I use a hair dryer (sometimes)
I also use Ceramic straighteners (occasionally)
I have been known to use shampoo with high silicone content
I have LONG, THICK, WAVY Hair
SORRY FOR THE LONG BORING HAIR HISTORY.. BUT YOUR DYE HISTORY IS MASSIVELY IMPORTANT WHEN USING A COLOUR REMOVER!!!
What I used:
JoBaz (extra strength)
XXL Live Absolute Platinum x 2
Nice & Easy Natural Golden Blonde (possibly a mistake!!)
Why Jobaz? - JoBaz is exactly the same as ColourB4 just in different packaging! It's A LOT CHEAPER (I got mine at Trago Mills but you can find them in SAVERS) for about £4.99 ... ColourB4 is £12.99!!
I used the MAX STRENGTH version because as you can see I have A LOT OF COLOUR BUILD UP!!! - It's important to note that my previous hair colours have mostly been from Schwarzkopf XXL Live Range which are full of silicone (That's what makes your hair look lovely and shiny and gorgeous!).. If you use Heat on your hair which I have - The silicone will melt into your hair apparently making it nearly impenetrable ... which means the colour remover might not work... I have also used red dyes which will probably of stained my cuticles - Colour remover will not get rid of cuticle staining!
You can find more about JoBaz Hair Colour Remover from: http://jo-baz.com/
I'm not going to go into the step by step of using the hair colour remover because it comes with VERY detailed instructions but a few hints/tips:
Read instructions thoroughly and follow them to the letter!! (it's really important... this isn't just like sticking a dye on your head!)
As soon as it's mixed up start applying to your hair straight away – it loses it's potency the longer it's left mixed.
IT STINKS
The warmer this stuff is the better it works I covered my hair with a Tesco carrier bag... gave it a blast all over with a hairdryer on the hot setting and then put a beanie hat on!
stand under the shower to rinse because you have to rinse for a minimum of 10 minutes and your neck/shoulders will not appreciate being stuck over the bath for that long!
Remember while rinsing your hair... what comes out will be clear.. don't be alarmed it is working!
After you've finished with the colour remover your hair will feel terrible - mine felt very dry and knotty - but don't panic that's normal!
I towel dried and then blow dried it this is what I was left with:
Photo: Exactly what I expected .. light closer to the roots as this is was the hair with the least amount of dye build up... but OMG so orange on the bottoms (which I also expected.. combination of silicone damage and cuticle staining)
I personally LOVE this product and it is a lot cheaper than Scott Cornwall's ColourB4 and does exactly the same job. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to get rid of the colour build up they have.. It creates almost a clean canvas to dye your hair again.
Some notes:
It's recommended that you don't use a permanent hair dye or bleach for about 2 weeks after the colour remover application because there is a chance that it will re-oxidise (bring back your old colour). I used a lightener the day after and it didn't re-oxidise... BUT when I tried ColouB4 I used a lightener straight after and my hair did re-oxidise so please think about it!!
You can use a temporary colour straight after though!
