The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel

I find True Crime documentaries incredibly interesting but I found The Vanishing at Cecil Hotel to be at best incredibly tedious click bait and at worst borderline offensive.

A two hour film would have sufficed but I found the four episodes to be mostly filler, all edited in an deceitful way to keep you watching rather than tell the tragic story in a respectful straightforward manner.

Director Joe Berlinger (Paradise Lost) was trying to be too clever, showing you how easy it is to fall down the rabbit hole before coming to your senses. Something we all know too well with recent events and conspiracy groups, yet it felt disingenuous and almost cruel to be be doing it in this way. It was almost tongue in cheek, a satire on the Youtubers who push certain theories just for more clicks and not for justice.

The more true crime documentaries I watch the more conflicted I become. You cannot deny they are fascinating but it's easy to forget there are real people behind these stories.

Elisa was a Tumblr blogger just like us, I was even here when she was an active blogger. That really hit home with me, I hope now she's found peace. Her death was worldwide news and was an incredibly intriguing case yet she deserved better than this.
