Dependent's Day Trailer
Joe shrugged, looking away from Burke's gaze. Burke sighed and turned his back to him again, finishing the rest of the bottle. Joe watched him again and something in him snapped. He sat up and shoved Burke off the bed, causing the other man to drop his bottle as he caught himself on the floor."The fuck, Joe?" Burke asked, looking up at him."Why'd you do it?" Joe asked, standing up as he continued to look down at Burke.
In my headcanon for the fic, Joe is a tiny bit more open with his emotions and feelings for Burke, though neither of them are the roses and chocolate types or the freely given "I love yous" (though they both have said it, Joe more than Burke.) So after the incident, bar brawl turned very violent, Joe's not sure entirely what he feels at first, he's a swirl of emotions in his head and he can't quite grab onto anything concrete. Burke seeming to be so calm despite what had happened adds anger to that all of that and it's the one Joe grabs onto first, which is why he shoves Burke. He knows what to do with anger and then the anger turns into concern (though maybe a slightly angry concern) because he was there for the incident and knew Burke took some hits, too.
And he's struggling to mesh the two versions of Burke. There's his Burke, who sits on the counter with his dirty boots and watches him cook and fucks him into the mattress, and then there's the Burke who has demons that Joe only knows a portion of and gets into fights and drinks too much and leans maybe a little too far into crazy (and laughs that same side of crazy as well) so he needs Burke to help him, to give reason for why the crazy Burke who was out drinking and being his usual crazy self felt the need to violently beat a couple of thugs after they'd sparked a fight with Joe. It's never occured to him that both versions of Burke want and need him equally.
