The steel table was cold against Kara's thighs as she waited for the doctor.
Her mom sat in a chair in the corner, a frown pressed her lips down.
Kara remembered something her brother had said weeks earlier when her father had scheduled the appointment - that Momma was upset at Daddy for believing in timers when they had found each other without them.
"Sorry for the wait, ladies," drawled a women with long black hair as she entered the room. She smiled at Kara, "I'm Dr. Horan. You must be Kara?"
"Yup!" Kara chirped with a nod. She gave a toothy grin."And I'm six! Like Eloise."
"Eloise?"
Kara nodded, "She lives on the very top floor of the Plaza hotel."
"Ah I see." Dr. Horan gave a laugh as she dug into her pocket, pulling out a black square. "Okay, Kara. Do you know what this is?"
"It's a timer!" Kara declared. "All of the kids in my class have one. They say it counts down until you meet Prince Charming."
"You're a very smart girl, Kara." The doctor glanced back at her mother, "I'll leave this here with you so you can finish the paperwork while I go get the anesthetics. It'll hurt when it embeds in her skin if we don't numb her wrist."
Leaving her mother with a clipboard, the doctor slipped back out of the room.
Kara's eyes stayed on the timer, sitting on the counter, as her mother sealed her fate with an angry pen stroke.

"Mom come on," Joel objected, trying to wiggle out of his mothers grasp as she played with his graduation robes. "I'm going to be late if you don't stop."
She bit her lip, glancing at the door before holding up one finger, "One more picture."
"Mo-" His words were cut off by a sharp beeping piercing the air. They both glanced around before he questioned, "You did remember to turn the oven off, right?"
His mother scolded, "Of course I did. I'm not new to cooking."
"What is going on in here?" questioned his father as he came down the steps. "And why are we not moving towards the door? Don't you have to be there early, Joel?"
"Yeah. Mom won't stop taking pictures and now she left the oven on."
"I did not leave the oven on. Joel is being-" Her voice tapered off as one of her hands flew to her mouth, "Oh my god. Honey, you wrist."
Joel's eyes fell to his wrist and it felt like the world had stuttered to a stop. The surface of his clock, which had been blank just moments before, was counting down in soft pink numbers.
"And it's a girl," his mother whispered, her voice choked. "Oh I'm so happy I'll have grandchildren. I mean - even if it had been blue or green or purple we still would have accepted you and-"
"Well I'm just glad it wasn't a waste of money to have the fucking thing put in him," His father piped up.
As his mother chided his father for the suggestion, Joel was still trying to wrap his head around not having to spend the rest of his life alone.

It's an adjustment having someone connected to you, even when you don't need them.
When Kara is ten, her chest is filled with a burst of pride for someone she doesn't know. She has no answer when teachers ask her why she's smiling and no answer when her friends ask why she stopped at the gas station on her way home and used the rest of her allowance to buy two candy bars when she had just said she was saving.
And there was four years when Joel's friends see him get even more nervous then usual, always corresponding with the start of exams across America, and get completely smashed a week later, always corresponding with the end.
Sometimes, both of them are filled with a swelling sense of loneliness.
There are days when they know it's their own and days when it's clearly someone else's.
These are the days when Kara stays home from school and shovels ice cream into her mouth as she watched too many romance movies. These are the days when Joel chews on his fingernails, or the strings of his hoodie, and watches stocks rise and fall like maybe money will stitch together the gaping hole in his chest.

Kara sighed as she approached the office.
Yesterday had been her first day working for Roosterteeth and although everyone had been extremely nice, it was exhausting to be the new person in a place where everything rung like family and love.
"Kara!"
She glanced around the parking lot before her eyes locked on Burnie.
Her boss was grinning as he approached her with a grin on his face and his fingers wrapped around the sleeve of another man. The stranger wore a dark gray hoodie and had black hair that stuck up in all directions, like he hadn't brushed it out.
"Good morning," She greeted, giving a small nod.
"Morning," Burnie answered. He pulled the stranger between them, patting the mans arm. "I just thought I'd introduce you guys. Kara this is Joel, he was gone yesterday because he was shooting something for a TV show. Joel this is Kara, she's doing the front desk now."
