Hyperreal Paper Bird Sculptures Made By Johan Scherft 

Johan Scherft is a Dutch artist passionate about animals and nature from his childhood. Showing adept skill in painting, he graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague in 1993. Experienced in multiple mediums such as painting, etching, drawing and illustrating, the artist main’s muse is still nature. From an early age, the artist’s favorite subjects were birds, and since then he has crafted many realistic models, painted to perfection with watercolor. The series of these paper replicas are an extension of his enduring love for the earth.

Scherft is a free artist dabbling in various forms of art, just as he creates his paper bird free in the ultimate state, free from the prison of a cage. Although his birds, as realistic as they may be, cannot fly off the fragile pedestal, are made as free creatures in tune with nature, frozen still in the midst of a rest on a branch or chirping. From the curious glint in their eyes, to the fine details of the feathers Scherft has resurrected a flock of these small creatures in a lifesize series of artwork.

Johan Scherft models these animals in a process that takes up to a couple of weeks for each piece, placing ever realistic detail, using watercolor and gouache to bring them alive from a paper blueprint before constructing them into the final output. You can find his sculptures his Etsy shop.
