The Holy Spirit lesson 03 – The Holy Spirit Will Convict You
When I traveled to Israel several years ago, my tour guide was a Jew who came to believe in Jesus. He had great insight into the Bible. I asked him how he became so knowledgeable about the Bible and what books he read on the Bible. Surprisingly, he replied he only read the Bible and prayed constantly for the Holy Spirit to give him insight and convict him of truth. He said that the Holy Spirit gave him conviction that Jesus Christ is His Lord and Savior.
Let’s read John 16:8-15.
The Bible says that the Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment. What does this mean? Let’s try to break this statement down into three parts.
The Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin. Jesus explains in verse 9 that the Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin because they do not believe in Him. Have you ever tried convincing a non-Christian about their need for salvation, but been rejected? It is usually because they do not seem themselves as sinful, and therefore have no need of a Savior.
The Bible clearly tells us that we are all sinners and have fallen short of the glory of God (Isaiah 59:2; Romans 3:23; 6:23). It is the job of the Holy Spirit to convict us of our sins. Once we are convicted of our sins, we will see our need of Jesus.
Let’s turn to Matthew 12:31-32.
Have you ever heard of the “unpardonable sin”? I have had Christians come to me, concerned that they have committed the “unpardonable sin” against the Holy Spirit. I tell them the good news that if they are worried about committing the unpardonable sin, then they have not committed the unpardonable sin!
The unpardonable sin is not one particular sin, but an attitude of unbelief. Jesus will always forgive all our sins that we confess to Him and repent of (1 John 1:9). However, if we ignore the Holy Spirit’s conviction of sins, then we will not go to Jesus to be forgiven of those sins.
Think of an alarm clock. When the alarm goes off, you are supposed to wake up. However if you repeatedly hit the snooze button, there may come a point where you totally disregard the alarm or throw the alarm clock to the other side of the room and go back to sleep. When we disregard the warnings and pleadings of the Holy Spirit, we may be come insensitive to Him and remain in our sins.
The Holy Spirit will convict the world of righteousness. The Holy Spirit will not only convict us of sin, but show us that there is a standard for righteousness, and that standard is Jesus. The Holy Spirit will convict our hearts that we cannot meet that standard of righteousness on our own merits. The Holy Spirit will show us that we need a Savior who will intercede on our behalf (1 John 1:7; 1 Timothy 2:5). The Holy Spirit will lead us to Jesus.
The Holy Spirit will convict the world of judgment. The Holy Spirit convicts us that there will be a day of reckoning where we are all face judgment. Jesus says that even Satan, the ruler of this world, will be judged (John 12:31). On Judgment Day, there will only be two groups of people: 1) the saved who believe in Jesus, and 2) the lost who rejected Jesus. The Holy Spirit wants us to choose Jesus!
Friend, will you allow the Holy Spirit to convict you of sin, righteousness, and judgment?

Consider this
What’s more difficult for you to surrender to God: your sin, your ‘self,’ or your stuff? Surrender something to him today and experience more of his power and presence in your life.
And when he comes, he will convince the world of its sin, and of God's righteousness, and of the coming judgment.

Convict the world of Righteousness
John 16:8: "and when He comes, He will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment" -ESV ( emphasis added) In this verse, Jesus is once again telling the disciples about the Holy Spirit. He is talking about this entity, this person, as the Bible always refers to him as "he". Jesus is soon going to be hung on a cross and resurrected, which is the greatest miracle performed by Jesus himself, taking away our sin and faults, taking the penalty upon himself, and then conquering Death itself.
but this verse shows the power of the Holy Spirit, and three of the reasons that it is better for us that Jesus goes up to be with the Father, so that the Helper comes down to us. The Helper/ Comforter/ Holy Spirit will convict the world of righteousness. This is a great conviction that We are in "Right standing" with God. It is the unsurmountable knowledge that, though we sin, God has forgiveness available for the taking.
I believe it is a sad thing that the majority of Christians do not know what this feels like. The majority of people I talk to tend to have no clue as to what it feels like to be assured of their salvation. They have not had the conviction for righteousness, as strong as we have had the conviction that we have sinned against a Holy and Perfect God, The all powerful God.
I pray that everyone may seek out this righteousness, and feel as the Corinthians did when Paul called them Saints in 1 cor 1:2. through our sin, God has saved us, forgiven us, and will take us back when we allow him to. I thank God that Jesus left the earth, as I also thank God that He was on earth. The Holy Spirit has immense power that very few people realize. The Holy Spirit is the one that works in the world, at the direction of Jesus (John 16:14-15). Let us find ourselves convicted of Righteousness through out trust and following of Jesus Christ, and His direction of the Holy Spirit.

The Blessing of Conviction
John 16:8
Jesus told the disciples that when the Holy Spirit came, He would have an intimate, personal ministry to them. One of the things the Holy Spirit is responsible for is guiding believers into all truth, and He is the agent in the process of sanctification in believers’ lives. This is partially accomplished by His convicting powers. In other words, every time we are getting off track or going in a wrong direction, the Holy Spirit convicts us that our behavior or decision is wrong.
This is accomplished by a “knowing” in our spirit that what we are doing is not right. When you and I feel convicted, we should repent and change our direction. If we know how to and are willing to cooperate with the Holy Spirit, we can move on to spiritual maturity and release all the planned blessings of God in our lives. If, however, we ignore this conviction and go our own way, we will find the way very hard and difficult.
Satan does not want us to receive conviction, nor does he even want us to understand it. He always has a counterfeit for all the good things God offers—something somewhat like what God offers, but which, if received, will bring destruction instead of blessing. I believe Satan’s counterfeit for true godly conviction is condemnation. Condemnation always produces feelings of guilt. It makes us feel “down” in everyway. We feel “under” something heavy, which is where Satan wants.
God, on the other hand, sent Jesus to set us free, to give us righteousness, peace, and joy (See Romans 14:17). Our spirits should be light and carefree, not oppressed and heavy with burdens that we are unable to bear. We cannot bear our sins; Jesus came to bear them. He alone is able to do so, and we must receive Him ministry.
