Elaine Stritch, "Send in the Clowns", A Little Night Music, recorded 2/2/2k10 at the Cafe Carlyle
Stritchy brilliantly weaves the song in with a story of attending the original Little Night on Broadway in 1973 with her late husband, John Bay, enfusing the classic with a haunting poignancy and a heartbreaking nostalgia. Her review of the show?
What a glorious, oh what a stunning, what a... What an evening, a truly great evening in the theater that was. We danced out of the Schubert Theater. We walked home to the Carlyle, but we danced out of the theater.
Thinking about how John Bay was taken from her so soon, how she had such a rough time with love for so many years, how she finally found The One but lost him after ten short years, how she's had to live for nearly thirty more years without him... Kills me every time. Apparently, Sail Away and Noel Coward were wrong: the girl can't get the laughs and the guy.
Send in the clowns, indeed.
