Would a hand-off help get the footballs to SDSU?
I can’t believe I’m writing a post about a college football game 18000 years in the future.
The OBT chart we saw makes one wonder if player 106’s 12 minutes of OBT, or even player 33’s 5.5 minutes, could be used to help Manny and Nick’s endeavor in some way. I’ve done some math, and here are all the scenarios I can think of that might play out in SDSU’s favor.
For reference, Nick and Manny averaged 3:53 minutes per mile on their 19304 dash from SDSU’s field to Boise’s.
1. Nick and Manny run for it. Nick needs to spend no more than 3:26 on each mile, Manny no more than 3:35 (this takes into account he’ll loose 30 seconds when he goes to get the balls from the train). They have to go faster than their 19304 speed and they have to carry nine footballs at the same time.
2. Manny runs alone. He still needs to go a mile every 3:35, but this time Nick is left on the other field.
3. Hand-off to 106. At his 19304 speed of 3:53 minutes per mile, Manny can make it 4.51 miles before his OBT is out. 106 can carry them the last 0.37 miles, a 0.74 mile round trip for them, well within their 12 minutes. In this scenario, Manny is ejected.
4. Hand-off and turn around. 106 meets Manny 40% of the way between SDSU and Boise to take the balls and carry them the last leg of the trip, which is 1.95 miles. Manny turns around and re-runs the 2.93 miles he’s just covered. To make it back to the fields they started on, 106 and Manny have to run each mile in 3:05 minutes which is fairly impossible and assumes they arrive at the rendezvous point at exactly the same time. Manny and Nick both end on the Boise field.
5. Three-way Relay. Let’s bring in player 33 to make this even more complicated. In this scenario, 106 will get ejected. Manny runs a little less than 55% of the distance, hands off to 106, and goes back to Boise. 106, who has run 2.2 miles to meet Manny, turns around and runs back towards SDSU for 1.39 miles, running his OBT down to zero. At that point, just 0.82 miles from the goal, 33 picks up the balls and takes them home. All three have to run at 3:20 minutes to a mile. You may notice they have to run faster than Nick would have to if he just ran the whole distance, but here no player has to carry 9 footballs for more than half of their running time. Is this absurd? Yes. Is it Manny and Nick’s best chance to both stay in the game and on the same field? Maybe. Can they do it?
