Disturbingly forgotten, the 1977 homophobic attack and murder of Robert Hillsborough (and his partner who survived) - blatantly a consequence of Anita Bryant and John Briggs anti-gay activities - remains one of the clearest examples of the consequences of hate speech.

Anita Bryant is still alive to be prosecuted or otherwise held accountable (predictably, the attempt to sue mentioned above didn't succeed). Republican state Senator Briggs died last year.
