CARDINAL | 4x05
Why I like older men
I mean, there's something oddly hot about them ain't it? Something that the younger guys don't have.
I just love how they roll. Confident. Calm. Intuitive. Experienced."I do it my way". Not much would surprise them cause they've seen the weirdest sh*t.
Well, considering my biggest crush was President Putin.. wise guy 😏
I... I don't want you to leave.
John (Billy Cambell), to Lise (Karine Vanasse) in Scott [S04E05], the penultimate episode of Cardinal, as they’re both about to enter their respective hotel rooms.
“I know,” she replies, walking into hers, leaving the door open. He soon follows her. They’re people of few words, our Algonquin Bay detectives, so it makes it all the more meanigful, all the more poignant, where a conversation or a declaration would have been de trop. The soft, muted tenderness between them afterwards, is more in character, their fingers brushing in the car, the worry when they’re shot at by Scott (Shawn Doyle) in the following episode.
And in their goodbye scene, in John and Lise [S04E06], few words are spoken, but there is a long, warm hug. It’s both heartwarming, and heartbreaking, because she is indeed leaving (to work in Toronto), but you can feel how deeply they care about each other. I’m sad this brilliant series is over, but I’ve enjoyed it immensely, and I’m sure John will have followed his daughter Kel’s (Alanna Bale) advice: “You can’t just let Lise walk out of your life.”
okay okay okay some thoughts before i go to bed:
i LOVED that ending. i know this is an Unpopular Opinion, but i don’t really ship cardinal and delorme. i think they’re a cute couple and they obviously care about each other very deeply, but i also think the 2 main characters getting together is boring and cliche. i predicted it right from the very first episode and was so fucking relieved to find out they both had significant others (josh can fuck off but i’m still very sad about catherine).
as an ending, it was very in character for both of them. cardinal was never going to drop everything and leave algonquin bay to follow her to toronto, and delorme was never going to pass up on a job opportunity for a man.
the show chose the most fulfilling endings for both characters individually, rather than trying to shoehorn in a romantic ending, and i for one am very grateful for that.
i think the show made it clear that they do love each other and that they would stay in touch and be a big part of each other’s lives.
The series finale of Cardinal is titled “John & Lise”. I CANNOT.
