On the Rapture

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

Despite what many Christians believe, trapped as they are in a constant state of delusion and self-loathing, the doctrine of a pretribulation rapture does not originate from their holy scriptures but from a man named John Nelson Darby, the most influential and famous figure among the original Plymouth Brethren (the very same cult into which Aleister Crowley would be born in 1875). Prior to Darby's presentation of this "secret rapture" at the Powerscourt Conference in the 1830s, there was no Christian doctrine of a rapture nor any kind of dispensationalism, for that matter. But, Darby didn't make the doctrine up. He received it from a medium.

Now, we know what Crowley thought of Christianity, generally, and the lunatics of the Plymouth Brethren more specifically. It's likely that Crowley, like most Fundamentalists and Evangelicals today, wasn't aware of Darby's "inspired" source. But, I doubt very much that he would have approved of it. Spiritualism and mediums only grew in popularity throughout the Victorian age and Crowley warned practitioners of "Holy Magick" to steer clear of them.

In Magick in Theory and Practice, he writes,

No spiritist, once he is wholly enmeshed in sentimentality and Freudian fear-phantasms, is capable of concentrated thought, of persistent will, or of moral character. Devoid of every spark of the divine light which was his birthright, a prey before death to the ghastly tenants of the grave, the wretch, like the mesmerized and living corpse of Poe's Monsieur Valdemar, is a 'nearly liquid mass of loathsome, of detestable putrescence.' [. . .] They are contagious as syphilis, and more deadly and disgusting. Unless your aura is strong enough to inhibit any manifestation of the loathly larvae that have taken up their habitation in them, shun them as you need not mere lepers!

Indeed, the same could be said for Darby's theological children, who like their spiritual father, are easily ensnared by all manner of silly thoughts and delusions of grandeur. We can thank Darby for the likes of Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Oral Roberts, Billy Graham, Bob Jones, Hal Lindsey, Tim LaHaye and all the rest. These charlatans were taken in by the fraudulent idea of a "secret rapture" (no doubt because it appeals to the ego). But, the mountebank Darby was taken in by the swindling tricks of a medium. And, now, we can add to the list Harold Egbert Camping. It would seem that history is not without a sense of irony.
