Eleanor: “How many times, in all the reboots, did I come to Chidi for help, he refused to help me, and I had to get better on my own?” 😏

Michael: “Never. He always helped.”

It drives me crazy even now. I always hear this line referenced when appreciating Cheleanor, but I don’t remember ever taking the time to yap about it myself!

Eleanor wasn’t asking Michael about Chidi. She wasn’t trying to make an assessment on whether or not she could trust Chidi or the rest of their group. She was trying to gauge her success rate. Because Eleanor KNEW if there was a snowball’s chance that she could make it through this on her own, she WOULD. She’d do it alone, and it wouldn’t be easy or painless or good, but she’d DO IT. She just had to know that in any reboot, it was possible for her to improve herself without the others.

And Michael matter-of-factly explained that no such data exists, because Eleanor has never been abandoned since she died. She never even had the chance to ask anyone other than Chidi. She always chose Chidi to entrust with her secret first, and he always rewarded that trust with loyalty. Michael may have cursed Eleanor for always figuring out the ruse. But he was also stonewalled over 800 consecutive times by a man too Good™️ to consider someone else’s suffering to be “not his problem”.

Eleanor: “What are the odds I can fight my way through this without anyone in my corner, just like I’ve done my whole life?”

Michael: “I don’t know. Chidi wouldn’t let either of us find out. Not once.”

Today I’m thinking about that place I lived one time. A place where I had a full Eleanor Shellstrop realization.

(Sometimes places are just bad and even if everyone around you is content to be miserable its okay to know that’s not for you.)
