Maya and Kaitlyn, now dating and expecting a baby together, had gone to see Maya’s parents and siblings in Windenburg. Once they arrived, they were greeted by Maya’s parents and baby sis Abby (Luke and his fiancée Chelsea were at her parents house, and Angie was in Del Sol Valley visiting her girlfriend Emma)
Maya: (after giving her dad a bear hug and grinning nervously) So, I actually have some news, dad. It turns out that I’m pregnant, and Kaitlyn and I are gonna have our little chickpea in August
John: Oh. Wow, okay. That’s great sweetie, but wait you and Kaitlyn are just girlfriends right?
Maya: (sighing as they join Abby, Kaitlyn and her mom on the sofas) Yes, dad, Kaitlyn and I aren’t ready to get married, we want to have our baby and go from there
Kaitlyn: Yup. Plus, I think it’s too soon for us to get married, Maya and I both agree on that
John: So, you’re just going to stay as partners and wait until after the baby is born to marry? I don’t know, it just doesn’t seem right to me that you two are putting off getting married until later (Kaitlyn bites back a retort)
Abby: Um, that’s so old fashioned dad (Alicia gives her a look)
Maya: Abby has a point. Dad, seriously? Kaitlyn and I don’t want to rush things, and we know that once our chickpea is born, it’s not just gonna be baby pics and cute outfits. She and I want to find the right time to do things, rather than get hitched right away just cause I’m pregnant out of wedlock with our baby (Abby grins)
John: Maya, you know that’s not what I mean. But fine, I understand your decision, it’s just that your mom and I didn’t even live together before getting married and we had you and then your sisters after, so this is a bit new to us. We grew up in different times, I guess
Alicia: (adding dryly for Abby’s amusement before she can ask) Yes, in the dinosaur ages
Everyone laughs and the tension is broken
Kaitlyn: I respect that, Mr. F. Just know that I love your daughter and I’d never hurt her or leave her or the baby. And of course I’m gonna marry her one day, Maya’s the love of my life
John: Alright, I'll hold you to it, Kaitlyn. Also, if you two ever need help with the baby once they’re born, Alicia and I can always babysit. I know that I can be a bit old fashioned and such, but I’d love to be in my grandbaby’s life
Maya: Dad. (Lovingly) Don’t be such a drama queen, of course you're gonna be in our chickpea’s life
Alicia: (looking teasingly at her husband) Now I see where Maya and Angie get their penchant for drama, John
