i guess this is less orientalism and more just me living in an INCREDIBLY white majority area, but i genuinely hate the state i live in. maybe it's just the area i live in, but it sucks here. i've met four asian kids who go to my school and one of them is a transfer student and one of them is a freshman who i met, like, two weeks ago at summer school. one of the others is japanese/wasian and a HUGE trump supporter. (insert the "i didn't know you could DO that") the other i only met one time in middle school, but he's vietnamese. i don't even know if he still goes here. there's so few asian people at my school that i've been mistaken for being both from mexico AND native american. these girls in my class mentioned that they were from mexico and so i asked them what part they were from, and after they answered they asked ME what part i was from and i awkwardly said "...south korea?" the girl that mistook me for native american was native american herself and asked me what tribe i was from, and i was just so baffled i didn't even know what to say in response (i was in middle school)
and it's not like it's just asians who are in the minority, either? i can name the black kids that i know who go to my school on one hand. genuinely. there's a lot more latinx people who go there, but it's still not the greatest situation in the world? it's just really weird because all the spanish teachers i've ever had are white and yet...? i feel that i don't really need to elaborate there.
my ex-boyfriend called me yellow for almost the full three months we were together. i don't know why i didn't stop him (i was trying to laugh it off) but it was just really, really awful. he was awful for a great many other reasons (homophobic, transphobic, pro-life apparently) but...yeah.
my partner's mom asked me the other day if i'd "experienced racism, even here in (our area)" and i just kinda. stared at her. yes. yes i have. i love her and i'm sure she meant well, she's a lovely human being, but i was just so stunned about it 😭😭 i've lived in my current state the longest out of anywhere else, but i'm originally from the south and the diversity there is MUCH different than what i have now. all of my classes had black kids in them. i went to a church ONLY for koreans. (not even because we were religious. literally just so we could hang out with koreans. my mom's buddhist, for god's sake.) one of my best friends was black and my other best friend was latino. and now ALL of my friends are white. genuinely. ALL OF THEM. my middle school friend group was majority white/blonde/blue eyes. it was ACTUALLY insane. the only asian teacher at my school is the chinese language teacher and only because we have a program for it. there are no black teachers. all the members of the "chinese club" are white.
it's especially awkward, i guess, because i only speak english? my mom didn't teach me korean as a kid because it was her belief that it would fuck with my english learning. which. what? but oh well. i've been trying my best to practice it lately and it's making me really hope for a future where i can interact with asian culture outside of the local asian market (...where mostly white people shop) and where i can move out of this awful state lmfao.
i'm sorry that this is SUCH a long ask but i've never really talked about this with anyone irl but i guess it's been bothering me more than i thought it was 😭 thanks for running this blog, it's been a real help :)
this is orientalism.
i don't know if this counts, but turkish peoole refusing to call themselves asians, even though most of türkiye is in asia.
i wouldn't say this is orientalism, it depends from person to person how they'd identify & culturally, i understand the common perception of turkey being nothing like asia.
the treatment that india gets. "oh, you're indian? are you a muslim? are you a bomber? why would you want to go there, its dirty and gross! the street food is dirty and will get you sick!! its disgusting and everyone there is dirty and doesn't shower and nobody respects women and everyone is a rapist and everything is horrible there!!!!!!!"
white people loooooove to "appreciate" asian culture (read: eat packaged ramen and watch kdramas) until the country isn't "cute and aesthetic" or whatever
this is orientalism.
Orientalism is my mother believing everyone in China automatically supports the CCP and makes propaganda to support it because one dance group comes to our state every so often that is propaganda for the CCP.
Like- I know for a fact she probably wouldn't say that about Russians.
Btw this came up because I follow TransplanarRPG (well, I did, I don't anymore but for personal reasons related to server interactions and a loss of interest. I still support them and think that what they're doing for the TTRPG scene is amazing, plus their stories are good) and the DM is Chinese and puts their heritage into their work.
I told her this and her immediate response was "you need to be careful and make sure that isn't propaganda"
I wanted to tell her, "and you need to stop being a xenophobic piece of shit"
I just don't bring it up at all anymore. I read Iron Maiden and am going to read Heavenly Tyrant, but I think if she knew they were based in Chinese history/myth, she'd lose her shit. I genuinely think she doesn't know. How, I have no idea.
this is orientalism.
You got me so high, got me so low
Got me out late when I should’ve went home
Love the way that you move
They got nothing on you
You’re a little bit sweet, a little bit sad
A little bit of this and a little bit of that
Love the way that you move
They got nothing on you
Was getting a haircut once, my aunt brings up that my dad married a Cambodian woman and that’s why I “look a bit Asian” and I lowk feel like they treated me as exotic for it during the discussion but idk
Is this orientalism?
this is orientalism.
People making those stupid ass "TROLLING INDIAN CALL CENTER SCAMMERS" video and perpetuating we are dirty we have no manner. I watched one and he had half a second thing at the start of a video saying "don't let the actions of one person affect how you feel about the entire group" shut up little bro you are only pushing that forward.
