wada sez: This is a little character spotlight for Marvel-comic-only character Ferak, introduced in “The Smelting Pool!”, which this strip directly leads into. Per Covalsky: “The Ferak character died pretty quickly in the first couple pages of Marvel US #17/Marvel UK #66, but he did have a pretty loud mouth; enough for me to remember him from my childhood for years to come. This small story is a precursory tale to what happens to a bully-bot with a big vocoder. Ferak's robot mode was never shown in that comic, but he did retain a bit of a 'seeker' feel to him and several years ago, John contributed to a project for obscure TF characters that I had been and am still working on.” Unfortunately, John’s original design as linked in that comment is lost to time. The dialogue here is very stylised, full of Cybertronian slang. Ramjet comments that his “nosecone is itchin’ for a collision”, as his main character trait is that he likes to ram his enemies using his head/nosecone—the others don’t get much characterisation here. Ramjet’s last line is dramatic irony, as Ferak does indeed get rekt by Blaster not long after this.

This band was originally formed as Titan, and they had a dream that they’d have a singer as good as Harry “The Tyrant” Conklin from another local band called Jag Panzer. After Harry had left Jag Panzer to in an unsuccessful attempt to join Riot as a permanent member, he returned to Colorado and joined Satan’s Host. The members of Titan asked him to come jam with them, and he wound up becoming their full-time singer. Mario Flores (guitar), John Flores (bass) and Stefan Flores (drums) are brothers. After recording two albums, Harry rejoined Jag Panzer. Second guitarist Bill Richardson tragically commit suicide later on.

wada sez: For some reason, Hot Spot’s name is often parsed without a space, as in the title of this page. He namedrops Raindance, who we see later in the comic. Setting-wise, the use of the time unit “lunar cycles” is unusual; the introductory blurb on the comic’s inside cover named the planet as Dantay, an alien world, though the art generally makes it look quite Earth-like. John's 50th

Remy, Yesterday we went to John Flores' 50th bday celebration. John has been a long time family friend and they have recently moved back to San Antonio from Jacksonville, Florida. Their sons JP and JD and Lisa have been close friends to Nick, Kelly and I for a long time! It's nice that they are back in SA. I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot more of them!
