Gimi's POV
You'd think sitting alone during a huge party would make you invisible to everyone else apparently having fun. You'd think.
“Why are you stuck here so sad and alone?” came to me Duncan's words and I looked up with a sigh, only to meet the sympathetic look in his eyes.
“I know you all pity me,” I said before I could control myself. He sat down on a stool beside me.
“I don't pity you, dumbass, I just wonder why you haven't got up from this sofa for three hours.”
“Because I'm a dumbass,” I mumbled and looked away. “Because I've been stupid enough to fall for someone out of my reach.”
“Nobody is out of reach for anybody,” Duncan replied strongly and I couldn't help but admire how, having already turned thirty, he was still such an idealist.
“I know you believe in principles and order, but just imagine it,” I said, maybe harsher than I'd wanted, “a beautiful rich lady living in a manor with a maid, having never tasted cheap wine or set her foot in a barn, and a naive, simple, ornery gravedigger, always in the same tattered jacket. A perfect match.”
“You're anything but ornery.”
“Even so, that doesn't change much.”
He was looking at me with such sorrow I wanted to scream at what an idiot I was. Even thinking about her name was crushing me inside. I stared at my fingers intensively, feeling Duncan's eyes on me. Broken sentences were running through my head, mostly things like “What a fool would fall for someone like that” and “You're just miserable”, and it felt like falling into a bottomless pit.
And I just wanted it all to stop.
where could she go that i would not follow, leaving my sorrow behind?
