Quayle is the titular sportsman and father and he's one #of the most pigheaded and irrational characters the series has yet seen‚ repeatedly refusing to involve the police even after his car is #tampered with and shots taken at him (could there be a reason he doesn't want the law involved....?). lovely Sylvia Syms is his younger #wife; the two had earlier starred opposite one another in Ice Cold in Alex‚ and both were legitimate film stars at this point (and I'm #happy to say Sylvia is still going at 88‚ having appeared in the first series of Gentleman Jack). there's a twist in this one which i #didn't pick up on until it was almost happening: clearly this one didn't stick in my head all that much. Nice to see Francis Matthews pop #up and he plays against his usual heroic type as a rather weedy architect (although i disagree with the villain's label of coward for his #character; if anything i think it takes more bravery NOT to pick up a gun and try to use it when threatened. so good for you mr architect)#don pickering has an (uncredited) scene stealing bit as a rather crass German showjumper‚ which..can't be a common role come to think of it

The Saint: The Gentle Ladies (2.25, ITC, 1964)

"Now you listen to me, Freddy. You needn't start emptying your garbage pail mind for my benefit, I'm not interested. Whatever the Warshed girls did in the past they've lived down, and I don't want to know the dirty details. They're loved in this town and they're happy here, and no dirty, sewer-minded little creep like you is gonna blackmail them, you understand?"

#the saint #the gentle ladies #1964 #itc #leslie charteris #john graeme #jeremy summers #roger moore #avice landone #renee houston #barbara mullen #philip o'flynn #anthony nicholls #timothy bateson #christina gregg #frank sieman #gwenda ewen #donald tandy #barry wilsher #this is another episode that stuck firmly in my head from first watching many years ago‚ but I'm not really sure why tbh #i mean it's a fine episode (barring a rather tiresome running joke about the titular ladies and their inability to drive without damaging #other cars or property har har). perhaps it's because this one has a rather unusual shape for a Saint ep‚ with Simon mostly on the #sidelines and having very little actual weight in the story; the thrust of the plot is largely unaffected by his presence and perhaps #things would have worked out much the same if he'd never popped up. nice to have some more women in main roles; Mullen was well known at #this point for her supporting role in Dr Finlay's Casebook‚ and both Houston and Landone were well known character actors with long stage #careers behind them. Nicholls was something of an ITC stock player‚ and found genre immortality a few years later as Tremayne‚ head of #Nemesis in The Champions. light on action but full of intrigue‚ this is a more Christiesque country mystery take on the series format

The Saint: The Loving Brothers (3.7, ITC, 1964)

"Course he is."

"Why not? I'd like to shove my fist down Templar's throat and pull his guts out."

#the saint #the loving brothers #itc #1964 #leslie charteris #john graeme #leslie norman #roger moore #reg lye #ray barrett #ed devereaux #annette andre #betty mcdowall #dick bentley #grant taylor #noel trevarthen #john tate #kevin brennan #ahh the old Australia episode. itc seemed to have a thing for it; it pops up in multiple series (Interpol Calling‚ The Four Just Men‚ The #Champions and others all dabbled at some point in the phenomenon). what was it about the land down under that so fascinated the itc boys?#to its credit this episode actually goes the extra mile and features a cast almost entirely made up of real Aussies (albeit expats who'd #relocated to the UK for work). actors like Devereux‚ Barrett and Taylor were the antipodean equivalent of the rentayanks who were called on #to fill any american characters in brit tv. it must be said tho that this is a tough episode (i imagine) for our vegemite loving cousins #the itc understanding of Australia is patronising to say the least‚ and apparently views the country as one large sweaty desert full of #rough and tumble heavy drinking hard fighting loudmouths (this isn't exclusive to this episode‚ it's true of other ITC trips to Oz)#still this isn't too bad an ep. another morality tale of a sort‚ as once again Simon uses a tactic of shaming someone into doing a good #thing (or at least not reporting him for having forced them to do the right thing). of interest: briefly knocks on the fourth wall as Reg #Lye's character apparently hears Simon's opening monologue to camera. also the transmission order is presumably more closeltly following #the production order at this point‚ thus recurring guest stars in back to back episodes (Andre in 3.6 and 3.7‚ Ed Bishop in 3.5 and 3.6)
