Quarter Notes: Blurbs & Briefs from Sound Bites

MAXIMUM LOVE FOR ALASKA: Dave Schools, Jerry Joseph, Steve Kimock and John Kimock will debut a new band - Maximum Love Vibes - with three gigs in Alaska in February.

Plans beyond the Feb. 21-23 concerts have not been announced. Ticketing info will be announced soon on Steve Kimock's website.

UTOPIA REDUX: Utopia will release the Complete Bearsville Collection later this year via PledgeMusic. The two-LP set includes radio edits and B-sides available for the first time on long-playing vinyl. Tracks include shortened versions of "Communion with the Sun" and "Sunburst Finish" and others like "Love is the Answer" and "One World."

BETTS RETURNS: Dickey Betts returned to the concert stage New Year's Eve in Macon, Ga., joining the Devon Allman Project for "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed." Betts had been recovering from a minor stoke and brain surgery following a fall earlier in 2018.

MR. DYLAN GOES TO EUROPE: Bob Dylan looks to be spending most of 2019 in Europe, where he has concerts dates scheduled between March and July. Dates and ticketing info on Dylan's website.

Song Review: KIMOCK - “Sagan”

Though it’s six minutes long, the new KIMOCK track isn’t a six-minute song.

It begins as four minutes of atmospheric soundscape that sounds like Toubab Krewe on Quaaludes. To make matters odder, this otherworldly noise is interspersed with recordings of the late astrophysicist Carl Sagan speaking over the music.

“Sagan” is the first single from an as-yet untitled, Dave Schools-produced album from the quartet which features namesake guitarist Steve Kimock, his drummer son John, bassist Bobby Vega and multi-Instrumentalist/vocalist Leslie Mendelson.

The lengthy, outer-spacey prelude finally evolves into something resembling a song around the 3:50 mark as Steve and John Kimock make their presences known and “Sagan” takes on some much-needed melody.

But it’s too little, too late.

Quoted by Jambase.com, Schools calls the track “an exemplary and daring experiment … aided and abetted by modern-day processes in electronic music.” Sound Bites calls it a bunch of sonic gobbledygook with a cool - albeit short - burst of musicality at the end.
