Kasim Sulton to Temporarily Rejoin Blue Öyster Cult as Eric Bloom Recovers from “Non-life-threatening” Surgery
Kasim Sulton will take the helm of Blue Öyster Cult “for a few shows” while frontman Eric Bloom recovers from what he called a “non-life-threatening surgical procedure.”
Sulton, the Utopia co-founder, longtime Todd Rundgren collaborator and BÖC bassist from 2012-2017, will take Bloom’s place on vocals and keyboards this time around.
“I am on the mend, however the recovery is taking a little longer than initially expected for healing and physical therapy,” Bloom said in a statement.
“Luckily, we have a deep bench. Our former bandmate Kasim Sulton will be standing in for me for a few shows and knock it out of the park.”
BÖC’s website lists gigs on May 16 and June 5, 10, 19 and 20 and beyond.
Sulton, meanwhile has been writing with Graham Gouldman and Phil Thornalley and promises “new music from yours truly coming soon.”

♫ Paradise By The Dashboard Light ♫
As I mentioned yesterday, I’m trying to catch up on some of the requests you guys have made, and today’s is one that Keith requested some time ago … I have no idea if it was a few weeks ago or a few years ago, for my memory is on the auction block — going, going, GONE! But I had a note that he liked this one, so here you go, Keith! Enjoy some Meat Loaf! According to SongFacts … This song is…
On the Road to Utopia: Kasim Sulton Turns 70
Though he often works alone, Todd Rundgren has one go-to collaborator. And that is bassist, guitarist and keyboardist Kasim Sulton.
Born Dec. 8, 1955, Sulton turns 70 today and continues to back Rundgren on virtually every recording session and tour.
Sulton first entered Rundgren’s orbit as a member of Utopia on 1977’s Ra. He remained with the band throughout its run and has pretty much been with Rundgren ever since.
Sulton’s also spent a considerable chunk of time playing with Meat Loaf, Joan Jett and Blue Öyster Cult. But Rundgren is his bread and butter as he made clear on “Unsung” from his most-recent solo album, 2021.
I’m on the road paying all my bills, yeah, thank god for Rundgren, he sings.
And thank goodness for Sulton. For he is the closest thing to an essential musical partner Rundgren has ever had.
