Even though there was no magic ‘they’ to put me on the right track, I did come across some kind people who helped me along the way. John Lyndon, a NEMS producer, taught me about art. [...] I was only too happy to be guided by him, but no art expert in the world could have persuaded me to buy the pictures that were brought round to Brian’s office one day. They were all of nude boys draped around a swimming pool, and the fact that they were painted by a young artist named David Hockney carried no weight with me. ‘If I put one of those on our wall,’ I said, horrified, ‘me mam will go berserk!’ Brian, of course, loved them.
