“The Happys” is the too-cute nickname that local landlord Luann (Janeane Garofalo) dubs her Los Feliz neighborhood.
Nice review of The Happys from the Los Angeles Times!
“The Happys” is a new feature film comedy from the writer/director team, Tom Gould and John Serpe. This dynamic duo has mastered both the Electoral College, as well as the popular vote.…

We start our annual Take 5 series today with The Happys. The Take 5 series lets you learn more about our 2017 filmmakers with just 5 questions!
Meet Tom Gould and John Serpe, co-writers and directors of The Happys.
#1: In 140 characters or less, describe your movie and why someone should see it.
A young woman’s journey from her fantasy of a perfect life to the reality of being an adult in our complicated world.
#2: Biggest lesson learned in getting the film made? Best part in getting the film made?
BIGGEST LESSON(S): Communicate. If you have a conflict with someone, work it out, talk about it. Don't let it slip. Don't be too hard on yourself. Do everything you can to make the film as good as it can possibly be, but accept that you're going to make mistakes. Do everything you can to turn those mistakes into assets.
BEST PART(S): Realizing a dream. The joy of feeling like you're finally in your element, like you're finally doing all that you were meant to do--that you're best at. Collaborating with each other and with the cast and crew.
#3: Tell us about you. What is your movie making background?
Tom Gould received his master's degree in film production from the University of Southern California, where he was awarded the Jack Nicholson Scholarship for Excellence in Directing. He has directed several short films, including HAVING IT ALL, which was among four projects selected for funding by USC. Tom began in theater, directing plays in New York City and elsewhere. He has edited feature films, short films, reality television and music videos. Tom received a bachelor's degree in drama from Vassar College.
A graduate of Marquette University, John Serpe developed film scripts as Director of Development for Second Son Entertainment. He has written/directed several short films and PSAs as well as numerous plays in New York City. His screenplay NOTHING MEN won the first production grant awarded by the Los Angeles Film Festival. As an independent producer, John has produced many projects, including the award-winning E3 Xbox 360 Media Briefing (aired live on Spike TV) and a series of short documentaries on cancer patients for Amgen.
#4 What do you want the Oxford Film Festival audience to know about your film that isn't obvious from its title or description?
We have taken an overused movie trope (the long-suffering, stand-by-your-man girlfriend) and thrust her center stage. We wanted to explore the journey from her perspective. As she makes bad decision after bad decision, she mirrors our own struggle to navigate life in an increasingly complex world. And like life, it’s a funny, heartbreaking, empowering, confusing ride.
#5: What does the future hold in store for your film and for you?
Since The Happys is our first feature, it’s exciting to see it blossom into a life of its own. We’re continuing on the festival circuit and plan to release it later this year. We are in preparation for our next feature, which is a big departure thematically and stylistically from The Happys. We will continue to push our boundaries as filmmakers. It’s only when you get out of your comfort zone that you continue to grow.
