Another interaction from chapter 8 that I like:
[ID: Three-panel uncoloured comic. A character labelled as "John White, 32, major" says with a stiff and forced smile: "Ah! So this be the famous Hamilton! I were tasked with reading many of your letters, sir. You appear very… eloquent." Hamilton, with a challenging expression, responds: "When one may be so obstinate as Sullivan appeared, eloquence is necessary." Amidst the tense atmosphere, an unimpressed Laurens thinks: "Lord please give me strength…" /end ID]

NEW JOHNNY HEADCANON
Johnny is a HUGE Lord of the Rings nerd. He read The Hobbit when it came out and loved it so much that as soon as Lord of the Rings came out, you could not pull him away from those books. He’s the most knowledgeable of the boys on those books, and if you even bring up the implication of “they should’ve just taken the eagles to Mordor”, he’s gonna literally sit you down, pull out his (theoretical, cause it’s the 1950’s here) PowerPoint and school you on why exactly that is the dumbest idea he’s ever heard. And it was a dream come true the day that those movies came out for him! (Yes, real Johnny passed in 1997, but my Johnny is a sort of fictional take and I say he at least made it to see all three LOTR movies😌)
And if we’re talking MODERN DAY Johnny, then those movies are his absolute comfort movies. (When he and Annie were first engaged he made her watch all of them. The extended editions, of course💁🏼♀️ Don’t even bring up the theatrical versions to him; they don’t exist.) He enjoys The Hobbit, but (much like me) he has some beef with those movies. Like why is Legolas there? He shouldn’t be. Who is this Tauriel character? Sketchy. Fili and Kili didn’t die that way, why did they change that?
Oh, and his favorite character? Faramir :)
Favorite movie? Impossible to choose.
Favorite battle? Helm’s Deep.
Favorite Hobbit? Merry.
Favorite quote? “I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.” (And yes he has indeed said this to the boys, much to their confusion)
“Bobby, you remind me of Gimli.”
“🤨 Is it because I’m SHORT??”
Love how this movie takes me so effortlessly from

Huh, guess I ship these two now
Johnny knows what's up. He's also glad he, unlike Joe, Roger, and Bobby (who'll be sneaking into Don's sickroom anyway) doesn't share a room with the pair
the nine University of Washington students who took the rowing world and the nation by storm when they captured the gold medal at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. The Boys of ’36 will show how the team overcame psychological, physical, emotional and economic hardships to beat not only East Coast Ivy League teams but Adolf Hitler’s elite German rowers. Their surprise triumph gave hope to a nation struggling to recover from the Great Depression.
