Secret doll house hidden in garage opens its doors

CADILLAC — Jeanette Majerle sat inside her old garage, surrounded by a thousand dolls that stared back with frozen faces.

“They’re very dear to me,” she said. “They were my playmates.”

She was in a narrow aisle between the crowded shelves inside the Dolls and Things Museum, housed in a small, converted garage in her backyard on the outskirts of Cadillac.

Benton Harbor remembers cult destroyed by sex scandal

Their members weren’t allowed to have sex. No meat, no alcohol, no tobacco and no personal property, either. Yet to this day, people talk about how fun they were.

These were the strict rules of the House of David, a  commune founded in Michigan a century ago by a man who called himself a messenger of God. He promised eternal life for those who joined his group and obeyed these rules. A thousand people came to Benton Harbor to follow him. And millions came to visit them.
