There's so much I want to say about the Great Brain series, which I was OBSESSED with as a kid and reread countless times, but IG is really more of a visual medium. So I'll just tell you that John D. Fitzgerald's series of books based loosely on his own childhood are set in Utah between 1896 and 1898, and revolve mostly around the exploits and mischief of his clever, slightly amoral brother Tom, nicknamed "The Great Brain". Honestly, though, every character in these stories, illustrated by Mercer Mayer, and published from 1967-1976 (with the exception of the posthumously published "The Great Brain Is Back, 1995, illustrated by Diane deGroat) is beautifully three-dimensional and worth getting to know.
