A few highlights from John Gould's groundbreaking Mammals of Australia (1845–63). The gorgeous lithographs included in the work were made by H. C. Richter, based on drawings done by both John and his wife Elizabeth during their time on the continent. These indelible images — of the platypus, the sugar glider, and the Tasmanian tiger, among others — introduced countless nineteenth-century readers to the existence of these extraordinary creatures.
