Song Review: K I M O C K - “My Favorite Number”
Steve Kimock has a busy 2016 on tap.
On Jan. 17, he debuted his new ensemble K I M O C K - which will tour throughout the spring and features the guitarist’s drumming son John Kimock, bassist Bobby Vega and vocalist/keyboardist Leslie Mendelson - at Bob Weir’s Sweetwater Music Hall.
And Kimock has a new solo album, Last Danger of Frost, set for a March 18 release.
To promote both projects, Kimock the musician on Feb. 26 issued a video of K I M O C K the musical group performing a live version of “My Favorite Number” from the new album.
The instrumental track starts with ambient sounds that could have been lifted from the “Space” section of a Grateful Dead concert. It then segues to a droning, atmospheric theme that showcases Kimock’s Jerry Garcia-esque tone as the rhythm section lays down a repetitive backbeat that drives the song along its three-minute journey. It’s not earth-shattering or overly original, but it’s intricate enough to pique and maintain interest over multiple test drives.
Kimock is a changeling artist whose career has found him shifting musical gears with each new project - and sometimes within each new project - so it’s impossible to determine whether “My Favorite Number” is representative of his new album, his new band, neither or both.
Fan will learn more as K I M O C K’s tour makes its way across the United States.
