Giving In

day 11 of johnlock january for @chriscalledmesweetie: paws

“Sherlock, what is that under your coat?” John asked, eying the bulge at his chest suspiciously and setting down the paper he’d been reading.

Sherlock carefully shed his great coat. “I found her whilst on my stalk through Borehamwood this morning,” he prefaced. “No collar and no chip,” he went on, anticipating the questions, slowly revealing the shivering little thing to John.

“A puppy!” John got up and took her from him, and sighing happily as she instantly burrowed into the curve of his neck. “She’s so small, Sherlock, what do we do?” He soothed his fingers through her coat. She was barely bigger than his hand, and too small to tell the breed, but with her flat little face he assumed she’d be at least part pug.

Sherlock went to hang up his coat. “I thought we might keep her,” he daren’t look at John as he spoke lest he give the game away. “As an experiment. D’you know, pet owners live on average five yea—”

“What’s her name?” John asked, impish smile on his knowing lips.

Sherlock turned back to him. “Beans,” he replied, taking her from him once more.

John smiled. Sociopath my arse, he smiled.
