He’s never craved for someone as much as he has for her - an insatiable desire that physically hurt. It’s an arrow that lodged itself into his chest. The rest was broken off, but the head remained deep inside the muscle and tissue, eroding into his veins a kind of wanting new to him. It’s not like with past loves - if he could even call them that - those brief physical affairs through the decades he’d so desperately hoped would drown her out.

But she’s always there. In dreams and regrets and hopes, a deadly combination that created a poisonous sort of longing. Here she is in front of him now, nestled into his arms so easily as though they were shaped just for her, and she’s touching him so gently as she gazes lovingly at him and he burns. Every piece of him burns for her and he wonders - briefly, foolishly - if she might be the sun. A ray of light in human skin sent to kill him from exposure.
